South Carolina Highway 110, known as Battlefield Road, is a 9.28 mile two-lane rural state highway that starts at the south end at US 29 in Cowpens, crosses I-85, and continues to the north end at SC-11 at Cowpens National Battlefield near Chesnee.

Having discussed Cowpens Battlefield and nearby Lake Blalock, I'll mention the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail that ends at Kings Mountain National Military Park near Blacksburg, SC. The OVHT is part of the U.S. National and North Carolina trail systems. It honors the Revolutionary War Overmountain Men, Patriot Minutemen from the East Tennessee area that crossed the Unaka Range section of the southern Appalachian Mountains on the Tennessee/ North Carolina border and fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7 of 1780, a decisive victory for the Patriots. The 214 mile trail starts at Elizabethton, Tennessee, and ends at Kings Mountain Military Park. The highest point is Roan Mountain on the Unaka Range at 6,277 feet ASL and the lowest point is the Watauga River at 4,051 feet ASL.

This park ranger might be DST

This historian might be 76er. I miss his history stuff.

I love history, and I passed it on to my daughter who teaches AP US History in high school. She and I used to stay up at night and watch The History Channel after my wife and son went to bed.
Our favorite place to go when she was you was the State House in Columbia. All kinds of history in the Columbia area if you know where to look. As a kid, I once found a Civil War cannon and some cannon balls buried along the Congaree River. You also used to have access to the tunnels under Columbia and Cayce, but they were blocked decades ago. The remains of one of the old river locks are still on the Congaree. The remains of the Saluda Mill, where confederate uniforms were made, is still accessible along the banks of the Saluda River. The old Confederate Mint still stands in downtown Columbia (it's now a Publix). Many other things to see if you just go looking.

110 - Required Percentage of Effort to Rub Howards Rock: 110%

21

May 13, 2024, 6:17 AM
Reply

How do people give more than what they have? If you are wondering what exactly giving 110% effort looks like - Eric McClain answers that question in the video below!

ESPN provides the following information on Howard’s Rock:

“Legend has it that in either 1964 or 1965, S.C. Jones, a Clemson alumnus, made a trip to California. While driving through Death Valley, he stopped and picked up a large, white flint rock. Earlier, Presbyterian College coach Lonnie McMillan had described Clemson's Memorial Stadium as "Death Valley," because that's where his teams annually went to die. Tigers coach Frank Howard began using the same moniker to describe his home field soon thereafter.

Jones brought the rock back to Clemson and presented it to Howard. The rock sat in Howard's office for a couple of years. While cleaning out his office before the 1966 season, Howard saw the rock and told Gene Willimon, executive secretary of the school's booster club, to "take this rock and throw it over the fence, or out in the ditch ... do something with it, but get it out of my office!"

Instead, Willimon arranged for the rock to be put on a pedestal at the top of the hill above the east end zone. It was unveiled on Sept. 24, 1966, when Clemson played Virginia. The Tigers were trailing by 18 points with 17 minutes left and came back to win 40-35. “

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/9380123/howard-rock-damaged-clemson-university

ClemsonTigers.com adds the following:

On Sept. 24, 1966, Howard’s Rock was firmly in place for the first time as the Tigers ran down the Hill. But the team did not rub the Rock before making the run prior to the Virginia game.

At some point during the 1966 season, Howard referred to the Rock as Howard’s Rock. The tradition really took off the next season.

On the Friday before the 1967 home opener against Wake Forest, Howard told his players that if they touched the Rock before running down the Hill, they would receive supernatural powers.

Howard also told the Tigers, “If you give me 110-percent effort, you can touch the Rock, but if you don’t, keep your filthy hands off of my Rock.”

The next day, Howard told the story on his weekly television show, and the media picked up on it. Thanks to the genius of sports information director Bob Bradley, that story spread nationally. He told it to anyone who would listen. It helped that Howard coached Clemson to its third straight ACC title that year.

How many games have been won because of the Rock? We may never know.”

https://clemsontigers.com/rock-solid-tradition/

Supernatural powers? Who can say! But rubbing Howard’s Rock and giving 110% have been part of Clemson Football ever since!

As for the video explaining what 110% effort looks like?

This video is a Great – GREAT – Answer to that question! Do yourself a favor and take a minute and a half and watch the entire thing!!!! Well worth it!

So honored to have gotten to talk with him a few times when I was at Clemson in the early 80s. Luckily we have the same last name, and my dad's name is also Frank Howard. It made for an amusing introduction.

110 - 110 Society (NIL Collectives Coordinated)

Like it, love it, hate it, or any other reactions you might have toward players receiving compensation for NIL, it is now a huge component of collegiate athletics. What an enormous effect the changes in NIL rules have had on collegiate sports!

Clemson’s sports, like those of any school that desires to compete at the highest level, has NIL collectives connected to its programs. Please correct me if I am misstating this, but I believe that Clemson’s 110 Society is intended to streamline multiple collectives into a more efficient process. According to Sports Illustrated from November 2023:

“Clemson Athletics has officially partnered with 110 Society, the newly launched one-stop shop that will facilitate NIL initiatives for Tiger student-athletes.

110 Society was named in reference to legendary Coach Frank Howard's infamous saying, "If you're not going to give 110%, keep your filthy hands off my rock."

Notably, 110 Society is a for-profit entity. This is a smart move, given that the IRS released a memo in June 2023 concluding that many NIL collectives do not qualify as tax-exempt organizations under Code Sec. 501(c)(3).

https://www.si.com/fannation/name-image-likeness/news/clemson-announces-110-society-the-one-stop-nil-shop-nick9

And according to ClemsonTigers.com:

“110 Society is the next evolution of Clemson NIL that will be a difference-maker for our student-athletes,” said Graham Neff, Clemson University Director of Athletics. “Creating this ‘one-stop NIL shop’ that’s aligned with IPTAY, our corporate partnerships team and our community makes it clear and simple to engage in NIL with our student-athletes who are in high demand. We believe this is a critical piece to helping our programs continue to win championships in this new era of college athletics.”

“IPTAY is excited about the opportunity to engage in this area,” said Davis Babb, CEO of IPTAY. “We consistently have donors and fans ask us how they can get involved, and 110 Society is a trusted resource that streamlines that process. At IPTAY, we are focused on finding resources available to support all our student-athletes and supporting 110 Society with its NIL activities is the next frontier.”

https://clemsontigers.com/110-society-launches-as-official-one-stop-nil-shop-for-clemson/

It seems noteworthy that the 110 Society was developed in conjunction with the Clemson Athletic Branding Institute “CAB.” According to the Sports Illustrated article cited above:

Clemson has also led the NIL industry with the creation of the Clemson Athlete Branding Institute (the "CAB").

The CAB is a 12,000-square-foot building that includes an audio studio, editing space, and two video and photo studios. The building is an NIL dedicated space with resources to help the student-athletes engage in sponsorship opportunities, content creation, and NIL education.

Expect other schools to follow suit by opening similar on-campus NIL facilities.

Real name Sarah Ophelia Colley grew up in Tennessee who started out touring with a theater company. She got the Minnie Pearl personna from a woman in Alabama.

Her first performance as Minnie Pearl was in 1939 in Aiken, SC and she bought what became her signature hat at a local store that is still there and left the tag on. And the rest is history. I only know this because of Wiki and relatives that live in Aiken that told the story.
