Bennie Cunningham! My reasoning is that if you distill it down to what started Clemson on the road to success post Frank Howard it was recruiting Bennie.Home town boy from Seneca who goes to play 8 miles down the road and becomes a 2 time All American , a first round NFL pick and a member of 2 winning Pittsburgh Superbowl teams. It was while Bennie was at Clemson that the team was undefeated at home in 1974 with big wins over Georgia and North Carolina and South Carolina.I don't know if this is true or not but supposedly because the Valley was so packed for the Georgia game the University started to think about expanding the stadium. That 74 season may seem just sort of "nice" now but it was a big deal for a team that hadn't had a winning season since 1967.The biggest result of that season was the recruits it brought in (Steve Fuller and co.) that paved the way to where Clemson is now.Hoping that Bennie is in Clemson tomorrow morning.

That '74 season was a blast...whipping Tech and the Dawgs consecutive weekends and blasting the bowl-bound Tar Heels. That Benny was the biggest guy on the team just seems weird now...but it wasn't back then.

It was Red Parker's high water mark...I remember Bennie'size...we had another great tight end who played before Bennie and the wound up on the same pro team...John McMakin...he was really a good one too...and so was Kenny Callicutt, and Mike O'Cain, and Rick Weddington I think it was. Oh yeah, don't leave out Willie Anderson...great football back then too
