CBB will be back next year as head men's basketball coach? The silence is deafening, and can't be good for recruiting.

Could explain the mass exodus of players out of the program in recent weeks.

because we have lost a large percentage of our team to the portal this year. I just can’t put my fingers on what is going on with our program right now.

Neff has not commented about whether or not an employee who is currently under contract for next year will in fact be coaching the team he is currently contracted to coach next year.
That much is a fact.

and is a concern. One of the best things that can happen for a coach in this situation is for the AD to come out and give a public statement of support.
That would make a lot of us feel better.

Especially since he also hasn’t mentioned whether or not Mike Noonan is coming back next year. We could be looking at a mass coaching exodus.

So why did Neff make such an announcement last year and, knowing that he did, why shouldn’t we expect something similar this year? He doesn’t typically comment on non-revenue coaches but football and basketball are generally commented on every season. The contract rolled over on May 1 increasing the monthly buyout fee. He has less than 2 years remaining on his contract. That is not normal for a coach who just went to the Elite 8, no matter how you try and poke holes in it. Brownell’s contract renewals have been announced as late as Oct but they were always preceded by comments from the AD.

Neff commented last year because there were many who claimed Brownell was on

The hot seat and clearly he felt a need to quell those concerns. As has been pointed out numerous times we’re coming off of an elite 8 run so no reasonable person would believe Brownell’s job is in jeopardy.
Brownell’s last extension was announce in October of ‘21, not last year or the year before. The BOT compensation committee must approve the contracts and they haven’t met since early December when the most recent basketball season was still in its infancy. All of that aside, times have changed with the transfer portal; I don’t see high profile recruits caring if a coach has 4 years on their contract anymore because they know that it’s highly unlikely that they’ll play anywhere for 4 years.
Bottom line is many of you seem do think that the lack of an early reported extension is evidence that there is something nefarious afoot. I do not because it is not.

It makes sense that college basketball programs adopt year to year coaching contracts since contract length is not a consideration for players.

I don’t think anything nefarious is afoot. Brad’s larger raises and extensions have been announced in July and October. I would love for you to be correct but we are almost certain to hear an announcement involving at least a 5 year deal, a significant raise, and buyout terms proportional to his last contract. If Brad was ready to do a Tony Bennett-style give back deal, we’d have most certainly heard about it by now.

Brownell was not fired last Fiday, meaning no announcement would be made until we can get at least 1 candidate to return our calls.
