Favorite Clemson player that .......

wasn’t an all time great.
Mine is Raheem Abdullah. #53 played in the late 90’s. He was a linebacker in the Tommy West years. Crazy pick right? I was a kid then. Sad time for Clemson football, definitely some rough years. I was too young to care that we weren’t that good. Just loved watching the tigers play.

It was a Peach Bowl
I liked Tony Steward, just for his perseverance
Also Dexter Davis, because he lived in my neighborhood in Greenville in the late 90s

#7 Cliff Austin. Running back in the early 80s. I always thought he ran with a definite purpose.

I like the Wayne Gallman pick. That was a dude. Reminded me of James Davis with legs that just kept going until he was down.

Maybe Lester Brown, RB in the 70’s (I think). Undersized, hard worker, great effort. He’d fit right in with our current crop.

Andre Ellington. Very productive but not quite as good as Priester, Spiller, or Travis.
Tanner Muse also. Kind of like Isaiah Simmons but not nearly as good.
Tre Lamar. Hit like a Mack truck but not fast enough to be top notch.
Obed Ariri and Donald Igwebuike. Cool names and excellent kickers, not to mention excellent soccer players.
A bevy of tough runners for Danny Ford in the late eighties- Tracy Johnson, Terry Allen, Wesley McFadden, Tony Kennedy, Joe Henderson. All tough son of a guns who enjoyed running over and through people.

I'm here to tell you that Andre Ellington was much better than Travis Zachary.
He sits 5th all time in career rushing yards at Clemson.
He also holds the 5th and tied for 9th highest single game rushing totals in Clemson history.
He is also 5th in rushing TDs in Clemson history.
He is also 7th in yards per carry (over 600 carries) among backs with 75 or more carries in their career.
Now the impressive part about those stats is that he did all of that in very limited playing time behind Spiller as a RS freshman and then he missed over half of the games in his RS sophomore season due to injury.

That's an excellent pick. He had strong family ties to USC Athletics but picked Clemson and had a solid career. Still can see him running an interception back 100 yards for a TD against Maryland. He was part of the team that turned things around in the late '70s.

I second the Shuey choice. Played out of his mind his last game against OSU in the Orange Bowl. Had a big tackle for a safety against GT in 2012. One of the few bright spots on the defense in BV's first year in 2012. Had watched more talented LBs get out of position nearly every play the year before. Seeing how Shuey progressed in both of BV's first two years showed me better days were ahead for the defense.

As a kid it was guys like Kenny Flowers, Kevin Mack, and Delton Hall. Tracy Johnson was awesome and fun to watch.
Antuan Edwards was really good.
When I was in school we loved to watch Arthur Bussey on special teams. He was such a hothead. Really funny to watch.

Renfrow is a Clemson rockstar. You could definitely argue about putting him as your slot guy on an all time Clemson team. I mean the dude has a saying “3rd and Renfrow” Liked the mini story about the special teams guy. That’s cool. Hearing about things like that is always interesting.

Early 90s Linebackers Tim Jones and Derrick Burnette. They were studs. Spencer Shuey. Spencer Benton loved the way he covered his own kickoffs, Brandon Ford, Antuan Edwards, Aries Curry just to name a few.

Tim Jones was one of my all-time favorites and my introduction to what a linebacker was when I was learning about football. Tons of other good ones listed. The first Clemson jersey I had as a kid was #10 for Dechane Cameron. How about Kevin Youngblooooood. Surprised no one has mentioned D. Hamilton.

Maybe NCSU?
Clemson was a ~8-9-10 point fave, but the game went to OT. No way to beat the spread? Well CU scored a touchdown to go up by 7. He got a pick 6 and the Tigers won by 13. LOL'ed all the way to the bank.

I remember Abdullah...

... I seem to recall he returned an interception for a touchdown in overtime against Duke, which made for an odd overtime score of something like, 29-20.
For me, growing up in the 70s, I remember one of Clemson's first, if not the first, soccer-style kickers being Eddie Siegler from Greenwood. He kicked a 52-yarder against Carolina in '71, I think, in a 17-7 upset win, and that inspired me to be a kicker.
Other guys during that era that were heroes to me were DB Jimmy Ness, RB Ken Callicutt, LB Jimmy Williams, RB Smiley Sanders, WR Joey Walters. And speaking of kickers, Willie Jordan, when he wasn't playing quarterback or defensive back, actually did some placekicking. I believe he kicked the game-winning field goal against Wake Forest, one of the few bright spots during that stretch of not-so-great teams.

One player I want to mention that no one has said is Terry Witherspoon. He really wasn’t all that good and really never had any great stats but I remember going to games and the crowd yelling “Spooooon” sometimes when he carried the ball. My grandpa had to explain to me that they weren’t booing they were yelling spoon. After that as a kid I decided that he was pretty cool.

For some reason Mike Buckner's name popped into my head. Mike was an undersized LB in the early 70s that definitely was ready for any physical confrontation that came his way. He had a reputation for getting in fights with his own team in scrimmages... I always liked that.

Combo of Travis Pugh and Jamal Fudge in the Def. backfield
Jan 26, 2021, 10:55 AM

The Silent Assassins".... We haven't had a scary backfield since. You come prancing over the middle on a crossing or post route you better be ready to take a thump. These days they might receive a couple of "targeting" calls though. But we don't have hitters and great tacklers like those guys in our backfield much anymore. They definitely affected games. To bad our offenses were so bad it didn't matter.

wasn’t an all time great.
Arthur Bussie, meanest guy to ever put on the Tiger uniform. Would have been a superstar had Ford not been ousted.

Rencher would be the only one. Other than that, I don't recall any of them being inspiring.

A star in his time ... but in retrospect made a serious mistake forgoing his sr year for the NFL when his flexible body had the robustness of a noodle. Still, an exciting player in college.

Bryant McNeal
Good player and a great guy. He had the sack on Rivers in the win over NC State in 2000 and had the scoop-and-score against UGA in 2002. I think he finished in the top 5 in all-time sacks.
Most importantly, not only did he play hard on every single play, I don’t know if there has ever been a starter that has loved Clemson more than he did.
He would have been an all-timer had he come along in the Dabo era.
