DJ's future - question
Sep 16, 2022, 4:02 PM
|
|
I have heard a lot of folks (including sportswriters) say that Dabo is concerned about DJ entering the portal mid-season and leaving Cade without a backup, which is why they seem to be all-in on DJ as starter for the time being.
But why would DJ Uiagalelei enter the transfer portal when he isn't a senior and the transfer rules have changed.
When Kelly Bryant left Clemson, you lost the season if you played more than four games, and it was his senior season - KB preserved his ability to start for one last season.
With the rule change that allows someone to immediately play (not sit out a year) after transferring, DJ can wait until the end of the season no matter what and immediately play next year, anywhere. This is more akin to the Spencer Rattler situation - stick with the team no matter what and show that you are a "team" guy and if the guy you back up gets hurt or pulled, you're ready to go step in.
My question is this. After the Georgia Tech game, Dabo casually mentioned (in his praise of DJ) that he was on pace to graduate in December. If DJ plays better than last year and continues to start, but does not look NFL ready, will he transfer anyway after the season? Would Dabo even want him back, with Cade Klubnik waiting and Christopher Vizzina enrolling?
Am I also correct in interpreting that, because the free COVID year, DJ would actually have two years of eligibility after this season. Two more years to try to make himself NFL-ready. Which gives him even less of a reason to enter the portal before the end of the season.
Am I missing something, here?

Don't be a half-wit. I have two degrees from Clemson. I'm sure you don't.
A lot of folks have projected that concern upon the coaching staff - and I get it because of the game where Trevor was hurt and KB was gone - the idea (if I have to spell it out for you) being that there isn't a strong back-up if we make the switch now.
Now go clean-up the spill on aisle 2.

I have 1 and that's enough. Your post is idiotic either way. Either that or you don't personally follow Clemson football. No Dabo isn't worried aboy DJ transferring mid season for numerous reasons.

Me to, that is total BS bc if DJ did enter the portal, and I do not believe he would, but if he did, there are guys in that QB ROOM that could be top backups. So I'm saying that fchrisgrimm is fishing, or he just learned how to make his own post, and made that BS up!!!!

If you think he is a coot, ignore him or answer him politely dip sheeet. It is a ligit question and if cate is a starter which I believe he will, I think DJ will be looking for portal . He is not good enough for college and hence won’t enter nfl until he proves it in college somewhere else. His issue that he is not processing fast enough and his wind up to throw the ball is too long . He improved from last season and game two was better than game one .. Cate brings the hot sauce and you feel it right away when he steps on the field .. it will take 2 more games and bye bye DJ. I hope I am wrong and I ll support him, but we all know what we want to see .. Clemson offense last year was I believe 100 plus in total offense on the nation (I could be wrong) and that is all DJ. He showed the same flashes as last year in the Gtec game

Since when did people who cheer for my alma mater get so dumb? I assume you didn't attend either.
Grace Raynor who has covered Clemson for the Athletic noted (regarding his game against Furman): "And that’s good news for a Tigers team that needs him to avoid the transfer portal at all costs."
Clearly, others are talking about it but I am asking about it because I think their concerns are misplaced.
Y'all at least pretend you are capable of thinking critically.

Your fighting a losing battle. This an echo chamber not a place for discussion. DJ is riding high right now. Now he has to show consistency. He hasn’t shown any until he has. I’m familiar with what you said. So are these people. They just don’t want to hear it. I’d like to see a few good games in row from DJ before I declare him the Heisman front runner like some here. Let’s start with 400 yards of offense maybe? We did get out gained by FURMAN. I’m convinced some of these idiots don’t even watch the games.

Did you watch the Furman game where on DJ’s first five drives we scored TDs? Blame the oline for not blocking on the run but it was clear we dialed it way back after the first drive in the second half. Not to mention the muffed punt, etc.
But yeah, go off lol.

That's the equivalent of "Everybody knows" followed by something from somebody's wildest imagination. If by some incredible chance(which I find completely ludicrous) Dabo did have that worry it would not be public knowledge. Whatever you're smoking? Quit.

He has had to babysit DJ for the second year now. He had to last year because we had no backup because of a transfer. This year, our backup has little game time college experience. As the season wears on, i believe he will be less concerned about our backup situation.

@2000® I think there is a lot of truth to what you say, but then it was a surprise that Cade didn't get more reps against Furman.
I think that makes it seem more like the coaching staff is all-in on DJ.

She's not the first. I don't get why you people are such snowflakes about the subject.
Because THEORETICALLY if Cade was named starter and DJ transferred, we'd be in a bind like when KB transferred and TL got hurt. Having Chase Brice save our bacon certainly wasn't the plan.

So no, Dabo is not “worried” about DJ hitting the portal, because unless he gets hurt, Cade is playing minimally.

Dabo isn’t going to lose a game because he’s scared a player may or may not transfer. Clemson has backups behind Klubnik (and I think Hunter Johnson is a safety net like Chase Brice ended up being in 2018). Dabo made the call on KB and will make the call on DJ if (key word) it’s warranted. We’ve seen 2 games of Klubnik in live action….against GT he looked like he was the guy, last week he looked like a Freshman. I don’t get the doubt from people who are all second guessing what Dabo will do.

I agree - but I thought it was surprising he didn't get more snaps against Furman. It sure looks like the coaching staff is all-in on DJ, but I'd like to see Cade get the work.
DJ played better against Furman and has played better in these two starts than he did last year. But I think we have all seen that the expectations created by his performance against Notre Dame have not been met. That is not the guy we see week-in-and-week-out.

he didn’t accomplish anything with his snaps other than to waste a couple of possessions and throw the offense off track when DJ had things going really well.
As good as Cade looked at Ga Tech, he looked every bit as bad against Furman.

Perhaps, and just stay with me here…against ND 2 years ago DJ had more talent surrounding him! It’s almost as if that version of the Tigers as a whole was better than what we had last year!

I mentioned that in the o/p, regardless...
He'll still have two years of eligibility remaining after this season - his senior year and the COVID year - I would presume he'd transfer at the end of the season no matter what, because Dabo isn't going to keep playing him with Klubnik and Vizzina on the roster. And it doesn't help his NFL prospects to ride the pines.
I would think he would be more interested in returning to the west coast for one or two years - Rattler had the connection with Beamer. I don't know why DJ would be interested in going there. I certainly don't think he's NFL-ready and that is presumably his goal.

Man, you are dumb.
If everyone knows he's transferring in December (I agree), then what would be the purpose of him transferring early, which has been mentioned as a reason that he might not be benched. I am saying that that doesn't make sense and you are acting like a made it up.
What year did you graduate? I thought not.

If you don't think he's leaving after he graduates, you're a dope. He'll either enter the draft (something that doesn't look like a good idea now - though if he lights the world on fire the rest of the season he might) or he'll transfer somewhere he will be able to continue to start and improve his draft stock.
With Klubnik and Vizzina on the roster, DJ will not start after this season, because those two won't stick around without the opportunity to start. I'm sure Vizzina will be a patient Freshman (unless he is clearly better than Klubnik), if he is second on the depth chart. But they'll want to play. DJ won't return next year to sit on the bench - he's smarter than you. You haven't counted the Clemson QB transfers or followed all the major QB's who have transferred if you think otherwise.
That's the other thing with DJ starting all this year - if CK and CV are both in camp with no meaningful game experience, we'll have a battle between two inexperienced 5-stars to start and whoever loses that batter will probably transfer because no 5-star wants to sit on the bench. Certainly by the end of 2023.
5-star quarterbacks want to play in the NFL, which means they don't want to be back-ups for long.

I always thought he was overrated. All he did was overthrow guys.
But you really should work on your reading comprehension. It is about the two different transfer scenarios, KB vs Rattler. Completely different. It isn't about any player's skills.
Even if he starts all season, I would expect DJ to transfer after he graduates in December. Do you disagree?

So right now there are folks on TigerNet that support Clemson and our coaches and players win or lose. There are folks on TigerNet that do not understand life other than to blame a coach or player any time a game is lost. Those are the folks that yell coot whenever anyone posts something that is contrary to their limited agenda and limited ability to accept reality. Example, Trump if he were a Clemson fan.
As far as DJ goes, he is our QB and will be until he is not so next year is of no concern now. We have a cupcake this week and then the season starts so hopefully DJ and all our players are healthy going into the next 2 weeks. I have been to games since the middle 60's and have seen great times, good times and some really bad times and understand that placing blame when we lose is just childish.

No, I graduated from Clemson in 84 and came back for a Masters. Lived in Johnston when there was such a thing and then in Clemson House, long before it was demolished.
Now you know and I know that the closest you'll get to attending Clemson is working as a parking lot attendant. You can run along now. But cheer for them as if you are actually connected to the school. It's so sweet of you.

And, yeah, every time I read "coot" I assume "double-digit IQ."
I loved my years at Clemson, but people like this kind of embarrass me - though, obviously, every school has them.
(FWIW, I asked the same question on The Athletic in response to their weekly ACC column and hope Grace will respond. Subscription site keeps the trolls somewhat at bay.)

Absolutely, but the COVID year gets him a free year, so even playing the whole season he'll have two years left, if he really wants them. I can't believe the #1 QB in his recruiting class would be worried about getting a third year, if he wants to make the NFL.
Absolutely different issues but they kind of tie together.

The reason he would want to do it before the 4th game is he would be able to redshirt. He could then play three more years at another school.

But it's the difference between two more years and three more years. Does a 5-star who wants to be an NFL QB really need a fifth college year?

Stats don’t matter at this point, so I’m not sure why you bring that up. If he wants 3 more years he’d have to stop playing after the fourth game.
Why do you keep changing accounts lol? Seems weird if you’re gonna respond in the same thread.

At any point this season anyway, so this might be a moot point.

It will all work out as the season plays out. If DJ plays well and projects to be the starter again next year, he will stay. If he doesn't play well, he will transfer and we will have 2 highly touted young QBs in the fold.

But if he's the starter next year (the chances of which are between slim and none) why would 5-star recruits Klubnik and Vizzina stick around?

I heard the University of South Carolina football team was primed to be an SEC doormat and get clobbered by a BIG BAD ACC TEAM for the 8th year in a row.
How many Football Championships has South Carolina won from the late 19th Century until the present day? Discuss.

I get what youre getting at. Only thing I'd question is the he could "immediately play anywhere" part.
Doubt there's much call for a QB1 of his ability at the other elite programs.
Which means he'd have to downgrade and that means if he jumps to, say, Memphis, he'll be just an average QB leading an average program.
He peaked two years ago. I think he knows it and realizes he's got a *good thing* going here. I bet he'll stay on even after he loses the job in October.
And then he'll go to Canada.

The one scenario being left out here is Clemson wins the National Championship with DJ starting and he plays (as so far) above average. DJ is putting up the numbers he has put up with below average receiver play. If the WRs start to catch the ball his numbers and the perception of his play will rise dramatically. There have been 9 pure drops in the first 2 games that would completely change the perception of his play had these plays been executed properly. He would be 49/59 (83%) at least 3 TDs (and not even counting a completion to Spector) should have 0 INTs. He would also pick up around 100 more yards which would put him at 275 a game. Man is on an 8 game winning streak and if he happens to go undefeated with a national championship, how are these fans who want him gone so bad going to react if he gets a poor draft grade and decides to stay? I have said this many times, DJ is not perfect but neither was the last 2 QBs to play for Clemson. DJ though has taken way more blame for the offensive woes last year and this season already as well. His play and his grade has been steadily increasing over the winning streak and this year again had he the benefit of those 9 drops, he would be stellar so far. Cade has work to do, but has an incredible ceiling. To those who are still pining for replacement, I cannot stress enough how irresponsible that would be in the middle of success and improvement, with someone who has clearly proven they are not ready. This is clearly not Kelly and Trevor. DJ is more advanced that Kelly and Cade is nowhere near as talented and ready as Trevor (or Watson) was at this stage of his development. Take a look at Bryce Young and his situation. His WR play has fallen off dramatically and now he looks avg. The Heisman winner was absolutely awful until his WRs started getting open late in the Texas game. The point is don't underestimate the value of stellar WR play when evaluating a QB. Sit back and relax tonight will show once again DJ has this under control. Fully am excited to see a big game from him each week moving forward. Go Tigers!

Most say it’s DJ’s last year

Every thing I have heard says this will be DJ’s last year and ever since they came to Clemson, they said they would be a three year only player. The most probable outcome is at end of season he leaves for NFL and Cade takes over.

Gosh a'mighty with the NFL hype. NFL's a pipe dream. He's not even a good college QB.
