My Final Post About The Transfer Portal

Here's why I agree with Coach Swinney's philosophy on the transfer portal usage. His philosophy is one whereas if we need a player for depth that we can develop then he's all for it. He's typically seeking someone that has three years of eligibility remaining. Also, that individual must fit the mold of the culture of the program. You can recruit the wrong guy from the portal and burn your team down based upon the attitude and character of the recruit. Let's be honest, most if not all players in the portal worthy of playing time are merely looking for NIL money and nothing more. Do you think they will care about the culture or being a team player? They won't and further they have not proven themselves worthy of the type of money they seek. I'm all for players being paid by NIL contracts, but let a player PROVE THEMSELVES first. Like Dabo, I'm all for recruiting the portal, but let's be sure that the prospected player in question is worthy to represent that PAW.

I agree with at least 80% of your post. I don't like the way the portal is being used now. There has to be some regulations and rules attached to it. It is totally and completely out of hand.
There are two primary reasons so many kids are using the portal. 1. Money 2. Playing time
A third reason, may be because they don't like the culture they are in and want to get out. They made a mistake in their initial recruiting decision and realize it now.
It's hard to quantify Money and my third reason, but look at Playing Time. How many kids have left their school and gone to a smaller (football wise) school? How many non-starters - guys not even on the two deep depth chart - have entered the portal? They aren't looking for money as much as they are looking for playing time. We talk about kids don't "just play for the love of the game" any more. Maybe a lot of those guys are transferring because they love the game and they just want to play.
We don't talk about those kids. They don't get the publicity. They just quietly enter the portal and transfer.

Yes and those players usually end up at smaller schools or lower division schools or they don’t get a scholarship at all and who knows where they end up. I guess they came to school just for Football and in that sense they really got an education.
Portal and NiL stink to high Heaven! At least as constructed.

Player Who has been through the Riggers and the stresses of a D1 program and try to grab him because he wants to play time rather than let him go to a smaller school at a lower level… Or do you want yet? Another preferred walk on? Me, I’d rather have a kid who had the talent to get to go to a D1 school and maybe didn’t get the playing time. He knows what it’s like to be a program of that level. Maybe he was just in an unfortunate run of classes where they ended up being a little less talented, but could still contribute in the right situation. Rather than take some preferred walk on Likely be on the scout team. And yes, I know Hunter Renfrow, blah blah blah, but by far the exception, and not the rule.

as well as how they impact their new teams.
While I agree that it’s best to primarily develop high school recruits and plug holes with qualified portal players, my issue with Dabo is that he tends to overrate our own players, and therefore minimize weaknesses on our team.
For example, I don’t see how he objectively looked at our OL and WR groups at this point one year ago and felt good about them. I don’t understand how he arrived at the conclusion that we were set and that no one in the portal would be an improvement.
Which gets back to the root of the problem, which is that Dabo simply doesn’t like the idea of players being able to transfer without sitting out, and doesn’t pursue the portal with the same gusto that he pursues things he truly wants.
Dabo is great with people, and widely regarded as an excellent recruiter. If he was “all in” on evaluating portal talent and getting a select few to Clemson, I’m confident he would. But he hasn’t, and that is why we haven’t gotten any difference makers through the portal - and why we will continue being a young team every year until he does.

There exists a possibility that Dabo is blinded by mild arrogance or bias, but I do know that Clemson got exposed this season. Ball control was a huge factor in our losses. Clean that up and we may be talking about a 12-1 season with a win over Florida State. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, but let’s get it together this upcoming season! GO TIGERS!

Dabo doesn't tear players down. He builds them up.
Secondly, a large percentage of portal players (at least the better players) are in the portal to garner a bigger NIL payday and that is a game that Dabo simply isn't going to play.
If money is the primary motivating factor, Clemson probably isn't the place for them.

Well I will stick with Dabo on this. If a player is transferring He either was not good enough to play where He was or He is looking for money!! There are more preferred walkons who turn out to be contributors than selfish can’t make the two deep guys that would ever sniff the field at Clemson!

Do you think the heavily paid NFL players aren't team players?
Something makes me think you'll be posting about the portal/nil many more times

I think the NFL is pro football! College was supposed to be Amature! I don’t know why this is so hard to understand. But yes many many NFL players are not team first .
But ask some older guys what the NFL was like before Free Agency. It was as better!
But at least the NFL players have contracts. This portal is just ridiculous.

I think the portal shows one change about Americans that is not so great. It is the principle of commitment and honesty. The same goes for coaches....they sign a contract...it means nothing. The players? They too sign a contract...it means nothing. It has become an absolute joke to say, "My word is my bond". The sad truth is that it used to be more true than not that if a man gave you his word he would stick to it. Now you can sign men to a legally binding contract and no one in the room believes they will stick to it.

Great post Chesty. I would say there are maybe 2-3% of Portal guys that are starter/difference makers but the rest are just hoping for a chance to play.
