Andre Ellington/ Buck George

Sep 7, 2012, 2:02 AM

Andre broke a 60 year old record in the Auburn game last week, when he rushed for 228 yards. The previous Clemson record for most rushing yards in a season opener was held by Rock Hill's Buck George, now 80 years old. The record had been 204 yards, set by George against Presbyterian in 1952. Buck George is a Native American and played for Clemson from 1951-1954.

Buck George is of American Indian descent. Played wingback in Coach Howard's Single Wing offense.

At that time there was a terrific running back in Lancaster, Bennie Blocker. Black kid, and we weren't recruing blacks at that time. Coach Howard said " I will call him a " Injun ", but Bennie went to stardom at Illinois.

Nostalgic stuff for me.I was a student in 1951. We could go to the practice field and stand behind Coach Howard and watch scrimmage. Sigh....

The Barn nightclub and George. Didn't G.G. George own it, and wasn't he related to Buck? G.G. and I were classmates at the old RHHS.

Buck George was my favorite player. He played wingback in Frank Howard's single wing. He only got the ball on a reverse handoff from the tailback. There was no quarterback.
