A question, NOT a statement....

Dec 4, 2013, 6:19 PM

Do our offensive tactics hurt our chances at an undefeated season?

Is playing a Bama style offense the way to go? It limits turnovers because they don't risk as much by playing such high tempo. They play hard nosed football by playing the fundamentals rather than trickery. The downside of this is that you won't recruit as well in the short term until we begin to win with a new style. Yeah yeah, sorry for calling it a Bama style, but they are a great example of a team that plays a style that limits turnovers.

The current style we play is much more exciting to watch, it also has more risk associated with it. If our offense plays a team that wants to dominate possession we now have to heavily rely on our defense to get them off the field asap. If we are winning late in a game, we now want to change our style of play and snap the ball much later than we practice which may throw things off a little for the players. The upside is that recruits want to play in a fast paced offense. Fans enjoy watching an offense like this as well.

There are a lot more upsides and downsides to both that were not mentioned. We know Dabo has said that even if Morris leaves, we will stick with this style of offense as it is the 'Clemson style' and is not due to Morris being here.

Obviously we have Watson coming in and also have Chad Kelly already here and are both an amazing fit for our current style.

What are your thoughts on this subject? Worthy of a discussion (not that it will change anything)? Anyone hope we change our style in the future?

ps: if you read my earlier thread... I am NOT the guy in the photo but it was my editing to make it Pro-Clemson, I was mocking USuCk.

Def want to see our system with a QB recruited by the Chad specially for his system. I like our system now, just gotta have more playmakers. This year we were pretty limited at RB; however, next year with some power RBs and possibly the toughest OL we've had since Chad got here--just gotta wait and see what happens.

Sick of discussing it

it's usefulness as an excuse for poor Coaching and going 3 and 9 against USuC and FLa. St. since taking over ain't gonna change without a change..would you care to discuss that question ..

This type of offense was created...

So that teams with lesser talent could get thier "playmakers" into mismatches against superior teams. Alabama is a recruiting machine. They can get the players that can truly run a pro style offense. The only other team I see that is constantly a top tier team running a Bama offense is LSU. Even UGA has mixed in the spread no huddle.

I don't think our "base" offense is the issue. It's the fact that CM or whomever feels the need to get cute with it is what hurts it.

Watch Auburn play. Same offense with no cuteness. They pound you with a power run game. Same for OSU.

IMO nothing wrong with the O. More teams in country are transitioning to it than not. It creates mismatches. It is this generations version of the beer option that everyone ran in the 70s and 80s.

I agree, it was our play calling and turnovers not style of Offense.

sorry...lol..what's the significance of the Utah - Stanford game ?

No. Our scheme allows us to overcome some of our talent

limitations. Morris did an excellent job this year of getting the most out of his running game. He wants to run the ball more effectively.

We've put too much pressure on the quarterback position and the passing game over the last 3 years with an inconsistent rushing attack. Lack of a quality power back and inconsistent line play and, this year, youth and inexperience and injuries at tight end, have held us back.

Next year, with the addition of a quality power back in Dye, more size and depth at offensive line, improved maturity and experience at tight end and the running options at quarterback, we should be a much more powerful running team. That will solve a lot of problems that our offense has experienced over the last few years.

Throw in a defense that, once again, doesn't lose many players off the two deep and should be a mature dominant bunch. Any style of offense needs the ball to be successful.

Bama's system is dependent on mostly 5 star w/ a few 4 star recruits....especially on the OL. easier said than done.... high tempo offense didn't cause any of our turnovers.

Re: A question, NOT a statement....

There is no yes,or no answer to your question.
The problem is we can't play an Alabama style offense
because we can't recruit the physical type of
"O" lineman and RB's that Bama, and most of the SEC teams can recruit.
Our "O" line is adequate at best, and the best running back we have had in recent years,Andre Ellington,is not, imo, the bruising type of RB that Bama has.
Look at UGA.Both Gurley and Marshall were highly recruited by Clemson ,yet we lost both.
Look at USC.Mike Davis is James Davis brother. He didn't want to play for Clemson.
I know we have had some great skill players, and more coming, but if your "O" line can't control the line of scrimmage,it doesn't matter if you have Tom Brady, and Adrian Petersen, you won't be able to play an Alabama style offense with out a ruising front line.

I would prefer that our coaching staff create an offensive strategy based on the personnel they have each year. Since the personnel (both players and coaches) change every year, I think it's a mistake to say there is 1 Clemson style. I also think you need to be diversified, so that you can beat all the teams you play. (potentially) It's important to be effective in both the running and passing game and be able to block and tackle etc. It's equally important to not make untimely penalties, turnovers, etc.
