I have recently started feeling some wobble/shaking in the steering wheel when I press the brakes. This means I need new rotors right? I replaced the pads in July so there is no way those are bad yet. Any helpful or Joungy comments are appreciated and expected. Thanks all.

Not necessarily.

You can take the rotors off, soak them in bleach and then coat them with peanut butter and then put them back on. You should try that before just replacing them on a whim.

They can probably be turned to smooth them out.

Nov 11, 2015, 9:49 AM

But of course a mechanic would rather sell you new ones, so you may need a couple opinions.

Or you can switch to an 03 expedition with a lift kit and you'll never notice that little wobble anymore.

Please explain this turning thing. Is it something I can do

Nov 11, 2015, 9:55 AM

myself? If so I will definitely give that a shot before buying a new set of rotors.

You can take them off and turn them in your hands but that

Nov 11, 2015, 9:58 AM

won't do a bit of good.

Find a tire shop or a mechanic that can do it, try Pendleton Tire and see if they do it.

Somewhere in Greenville would be best since I am here more

Maybe Warrens Tires on Wheels. It is close by and Warren

That is close by, I will give them a call today and tell

Nov 11, 2015, 10:26 AM

and much thanks.

Absolutely you can do this yourself...

Nov 11, 2015, 10:00 AM [ in reply to Please explain this turning thing. Is it something I can do ]

Heat the rotors up in the microwave first to get them soft, then use a rubber mallet to beat them smooth. Very simple job.

I may just do this at lunch today with the work microwave!***

It has been raining a lot, and you have probably warped them

Nov 11, 2015, 9:54 AM

by driving through some water while stopping.

They can be turned on a lathe to true their surfaces back to straight and parallel for about $100.

So not something I can do without a lathe.

Nov 11, 2015, 9:56 AM

Thank you, I will be making some calls about that today it sounds like.

You can just use a dremel tool with a

Nov 11, 2015, 10:09 AM

lathe attachment. Put the rotors in the microwave covered in tin foil for like 7 minutes first though....gotta get them hot before they'll smooth out good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only a dummy would bother with the brakes in this instance

Nov 11, 2015, 10:01 AM

Clearly you must replace the steering wheel if it's shaking!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

what all did you have done

Nov 11, 2015, 10:04 AM

just pads replaced and if not a shady tree mechanic they should have checked the rotors... now how many calipers do you have? could be a sticking caliper .. easy to rebuild yourself if you compressed air.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I replaced the pads myself.

Nov 11, 2015, 10:17 AM

There are 4 calipers, one for each wheel. How do I know if it's sticking? I am not a brakes expert.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ROH

Where did you get the pads replaced in July?

Nov 11, 2015, 10:04 AM

Seems like a mechanic would have noticed your rotors needing turned or replaced at that time. I mean, any mechanic with even like a tiny amount of mechanic in him would have noticed and mentioned this.

Something is awry, but it seems like it would be weird that your rotors would get worn between July and now while having new brake pads.

I'd probably just sell the car and get a dragon boat if I were you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did the pads myself and did not check the rotors

Nov 11, 2015, 10:12 AM

by the "eye test" they looked fine and I was not experiencing wobble then.

I'm assuming this is on your car

Nov 11, 2015, 10:06 AM

If it was a Jeep, I'd say steering stabilizer. Put sugar in the gas tank to winterize, and clean the grime off of your headlights with sand paper.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, the car. The jeep's steering is so loose I probably

Nov 11, 2015, 10:10 AM

wouldn't feel the tires shaking when I brake anyway. I'll get right on that winterization...

Jerry Cain Auto in Pendleton on 76 will prolly be cheaper

Nov 11, 2015, 10:13 AM

than Pendleton Tire, but either of those definitely recommend over a chain.
