Ok I'm playing dumb here, need an explanation...

Oct 10, 2012, 9:44 AM

Why would CU agree to let a kid play one season of basketball and then leave for a 2 yr. mission trip? Was that discussed before he came here? Doesn't that kind of stink for CU? What if the kid is a baller and lights it up then all of a sudden he's gone. He comes back to CU eventually as a 20+ yr. old Junior? I'm confused a little, someone enlighten me please.

Because we need immediate help at guard**

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Well, if he's a baller and they said "no you can't go

Oct 10, 2012, 9:46 AM

on a mission trip" - he probably would have gone somewhere else.

Also, mission trips are considered pretty commendable efforts - so most people would actually try to encourage that.

Is he a mormon?

Oct 10, 2012, 9:47 AM

I know they do the 2 year mission thing in college.

Yes. He was supposed to go this year but his preacher changed it on him to a couple of years later. By the byu didnt have a scholarship for him.

You know you've raised a real tiger fan when you ask your son what he wants his cub scout pinewood derby car to be and he says a Tiger!

Re: we were a finalist for him before he went to BYU

BB knew him and recruited him before so we knew about the mission and the whole deal. BB wanted him knowing that so I trust the coach. Plus we need the body even if only for one year before the mission.

Plus, Coleman comes back next year and our 2 commits

Oct 10, 2012, 10:32 AM

so far are both perimeter players. Whatever big we sign fills his scholarship. When he's ready to return in 2 years, more mature both physically and mentally, Sapp will be graduating. It actually works out rather well

Luck? 6-2 Shooting Guard Devin Coleman

Oct 10, 2012, 10:00 AM

was injured in July. He'll miss the season and return for 3 more in November 2014. Demarcus Harrison is a 6-5 sophomore shooting guard who found out shortly after Coleman's injury that he would have to transfer to another school in order to play basketball next year. He was rated the #86 player nationally and is from Greenwood, SC.

Seems like a perfect fit!

We have to fill a need and I don't think we would turn him down because of relegious obligations. A lot of scholarship athletes at BYU serve a 2 year mission trip during their collegic career.

I understand all the above but to me it seems a bit of a gamble to have the kid 1 year. Heck Brownell may not be here in 2 years by his own accord of CU's. You never know what will happen year to year in college sports. I respect the whole religious obligation and I commend the young man. Final question, after the 2 years does he have to return to CU or can he go elsewhere?

I don't see any downside even should he only play one year with the hole we need to fill this year. I admire him for his mission trip. My guess is he is talented enough to help us out this year and when/if he returns for the other two years down the road.

Now I am playing dumb..... just what does 'not be

here in 2 years BY HIS OWN ACCORD OF CU'S" even mean? I fully understand why we need another guard this year and that it is not a "gamble" for us in any way if he plays only one year. Actually, it fits our scholarship numbers better if he does leave for the next 2 years but not "accord of CU's" so much.

And for apparently riling up so many with what I thought was a simple question. Good grief.

What difference does it make? It's about Clemson sports.

Also, as to the actual topic of the post.

In a similar situation, a school that accepts JUCOs might be overjoyed to get only one year of play out of a terrific talent who had gone to the JUCO and then planned to turn pro after his one year of college.

Remember Steve Francis? The JUCO kid that ended up at Maryland at the end of Rick Barnes' Clemson tenure that only gave the Terps one year?

He was the difference in that team achieving greatness for that one season.
