Not being critical

Just an observation in that I watch a lot of football and see a bunch of screens, but Clemson seems to run that play totally different. What I consider the bubble screen has become a wasted play. How many times do you see the lead blocker whiff on his block. That play can not work if the guy cannot block that closest defender. I wish they either run a traditional screen or scrap the screen out of the playbook. Dang I’m no coach but is this not fairly obvious to even the average fan that it does not work. If I’m wrong please correct me.

Your shot in. A totally wasted play every time they run it.

All the bubble screen does is get us "behind the sticks." I doubt that we average 2 yds per attempt on it, and it usually loses yardage. And it's not like they're using it to set up something else. It is, as you said, a wasted play.

Our WR blocking sucks.
No idea why, but it's been consistent for several years now.
A couple of the guys seem to put in no effort.

I think Randall was in the position of blocker several times last night and missed. He’s a freshman who didn’t play until 2 weeks ago. But you gotta play him to get ready for the end of the season. He’ll improve.

EJ Williams is pitiful blocking on the bubbles. Probably why he isn't playing much, no effort in my opinion.

That maybe who I am thinking of but he looked to be super skinny and looks to be someone that it may be a reach to expect him to block anyone. Kind of felt bad for him but it does at times looks like the effort on that block is lacking. You need great wideouts to catch the ball but being able to block is a big part of that position especially if you are going to throw it around the LOS.

EJ Williams was atrocious on one play last night where if he made any effort to block, no one could tell. Think it was Spector who got blown up on account of his poor blocking on the play I’m thinking about.
Imo, blocking DBs is 15% technique and 85% effort. Any of our WRs should generally be able to block quasi-effectively on those outside plays. When they miss that bad, most of it is on their own lack of effort. My 0.02.

I have 2 thoughts on this

1) The quick WR screens are more effective from under center than out of the gun. When you run these from the gun it takes more time for the QB to get the snap, situate the ball in his hand, and get the throw out to the flat. This can be done really quickly from under center, but we don't run enough plays from under center to do this without tipping our hand.
2) Our WR blocking on the outside is terrible and has been for 2 or 3 years now. This was a strength when we had Scott, Williams, and Renfrow. Watch our WR blocking outside back then compared to now. It's just night and day. On the majority of quick screens we throw now our WRs either whiff completely, hold their block for about 1 second and lose it, or just get trucked back into the WR. About half of our screens result in the receiver getting hit in the backfield immediately. Eventually one of these will result in a turnover.

Give me Charone Peake blocking any day. Dude was a beast and just hammered DB’s.

sometimes you run an array of plays as a strategy

to keep the defense guessing and anticipating the wrong thing. You can't always look at one play as one play, you need to look at the series strategy.

Very true. One play often sets up
Tigers up to no. 4 so I guess things are going well!

We were spoiled by excellent blocking WRs like Tee Higgins and Artavis Scott.***

You are critical and so am I because the successful screens that I see work because the team linemen that are quick enough to get out and make blocks. Are our linemen quick enough or is the screen just to set up other plays?
