Need to unleash Phil Mafah

I love Will Shipley and we need to keep him as an important part of our offense but we need to give Mafah more plays. The dude is a beast of a runner and we are lucky he didn't enter the transfer portal. He is the type of back that can wear down a defense.

Could not agree more. Mafah should have played more his first year as well as last year. Look for him to get 1000 yds this year.

Actually, I really don't think our RB recruiting has fallen off. Most of our backs in the past were not considered as really high recruits compared to other backs that went to Bama and Georgia. We just happened to look beyond the rankings to find the true gems. Etiene wasn't considered a high recruit, barely making 4 stars some rankings but he turned out to be worth a 5-star ranking. On that note, I'm thinking we found another gem in Jamarius Haynes. Good size, good speed, and great stats plus looks great on tape. Don't be surprised he turns out to be our No. 1 in two years. Maybe next year if Shipley and Mafah skip their senior year.

Except Mafah and ETN were 4* and Shipley a 5*. CJ has never signed more than a 3* RB. I have high hopes for our backs in the last two cycles but you can’t rely on HRs and be elite

CJ locked up the top RB on our board early this cycle. It looks like he’s going to do it again for the 2025 class. I know this spoils your criticisms of Spiller, but sometimes it takes a young coach time to build a solid reputation.

You should stick to only defending the terrible coach ( Brownell ). When you attack the good coaches too, it completely gives away your real intent. Trolling 101. You’re welcome.

Re: How are you feeling about RBs … it’s not complicated

As expected.
With end of 2021 season, we had three solid backs, with two of them having star potential. Therefore, we were not an attractive option.
With end of 2022 season, we had 1 star back and another that looked primed to be a star. Therefore, we were attractive for good, but lower rated, blacks who are accepting of the likelihood that major PT was not likely until 2024 … maybe 2025 season.
As we recruit throughout 2023 for the 2024 signing class, we are a highly attractive option for even the highly regarded backs.
It’s not that complicated.

https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Football/CollegeTeamTalentComposite/2022 College Football Team Talent Composite In order to create the most comprehensive Team Recruiting Ranking without any notion of bias, 247Sports Team Recruiting Ranking is solely based on the 247Sports Composite Rating.
Please review the composite index. Perhaps scroll back over the last decade. At that point a reasonable person could expect to see you admit that your premise was incorrect and maybe even an apology. Because your arguments about our recruiting are completely wrong. You claim our recruiting has slipped based on information from recruiting services. Yet those same recruiting services show the gap in talent between Clemson and those teams you mention had never been smaller,

Alabama running back recruiting has been so great they had to take a transfer from Georgia Tech. Bama's wide receiver recruiting has been so great that same RB, was their #3 receiver.

schools like Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia are providing financial incentives for those elite backs to sit on the sidelines for a year or two and wait their turn, something that Clemson either can't or isn't able to do. The highly recruited kids are far more interested in a pay day as opposed to immediate playing time.

I agree!
I love our RB room. I think we got an underrated player in Keith Adams Jr. By virtue of him "I believe" being from a state not known for producing a lot of top-level talent; his stock likely took a dip. But, he's originally from Georgia! And, played at I believe a 6A school before transferring out west to Utah or Colorado. One of them.
Shipley and Mafah have both explained how much they understand the durability aspect and have no issue sharing carries. As an RB; you should honestly want another high-level RB in the room, that way you don't get "Earl Campbell(d)" to an early end of your football career. Especially if you have NFL aspirations and want to leave some tread on the tire for your 2nd contract.

I agree with everything you said HillRock but I'm sure Mafah expected to get more carries than he is getting. He deserves more opportunities.

Coaches call the plays as needed to win a game, "deserving" (what ever that means) should not enter into it. Mafah has improved and will have a bigger role in games, not because he "deserves" but to win.

neither Shipley nor Mafah need to be in college in 2024

their shelf life just won't support it - especially Shipley (who in my mind is losing quickness with every hit).
So you could interpret any underuse of Mafah as overuse of Shipley just as well.
But any suggestion that Mafah was equally as college game ready as Shipley was when they first came in is simply wrong. Remember that Mafah was not only behind Shipley, but also behind Pace too as a Freshman.
The reliance on Ship thus isn't evidence of some form of racism or other favoritism issue - it's simply one outgrowth of an incredibly ill-conceived, and thus conservative as well, approach of a coaching staff trying, and failing, to diagnose its own offensive woes.
Mafah has improved enough though in the interim to the point that he and Ship should now be seen as two sides to the same coin.
Certainly, our new OC comes with the reputation to be able to see and correct these issues. I expect big years from both players as they look to put their mark on a program in their final season.

The coaches love Shipley and don’t seem to be able to play Mafah much.

Weird that Mafah, who would have been a prime NIL transfer target, doesn’t seem to share your opinion of how he’s treated by the coaches.

I think we will see more 2-back sets this year. Both are going to get plenty of touches and the combination just adds complexity for defenses to deal with.

If Shipley can catch he would be heck playing in the slot. Did not catch very well in his freshman season and honestly do not know how much that has or has not improved. I just think you put 11 on the field why not have 2 of your better players on the field at the same time.

I was impressed with Big Phil's improved agility, acceleration, and vision the last third of the season. Blocking has always been really good. The man needs to be fed the ball. I like Ship as a Utility back that lines up all over the field. Force the D to keep an eye on him. I believe Riley's sees this as it is obvious.

Shipley was billed as good and has been even better. Our record the last 2 years would be less without him. He has been the #1 player. He arrived ready to not just play, but to "star". To imply he should have less touches running the ball is ludicrous.
