Killer Instinct

Sep 25, 2012, 9:50 PM

A small handful have it on Offense; none visible this year on Defense. There are only two ways to get it -

1) You are born with it. You love to hit. You are a violent psychopath. You learned early to speed up as you are about to make contact and run through your opponent. You are juiced every time you make contact.
2) You are in a culture that promotes it. Your coach demands it. You have never been afraid to hit, and you feel recognized and rewarded when you make the big pops. You are humiliated by the coach when you show fear or shy away from contact.

Many of us who attended Clemson University from 1978 -1992 (roughly the Ford years) were spoiled. Most of the team had Killer Instinct. The players were pumped and it rubbed off on the fans. Reminiscing about the "glory days" over a cold brew has its place, but this is now and a little adrenaline in Tiger Town would go along way.

There is nothing wrong with recruiting 4 and 5-star speed, which is how H.S. player talent seems to be gauged, but a great recruiter must recruit HEART and KILLER INSTINCT especially on Defense! It's a gift some coaches have ... I hope Venables is one of them.

...and he was once called a "headhunter" by the school principle. "We need a few more of those on the team" he once said. I remember once how that fellow told me how he hit an opposing player square in the privates while under the pile.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a killer instinct with our defense.....

too much this season - especially not against FSU. I saw intimidated players on defense against FSU.

Is it fair to say that none of the defensive players have it? Blanks looks like he has it, he doesn't always know where to be but #### when he does he lays the wood to some guys.

Guys w/Killer Instinct don't worry about whats Fair. They hit

We need hitters ... I hope Blanks turns into Ronnie Lott or Ed Reed. Like you said, too early tell if he will ever be, but he's not now.

I dont know how many of you will remember this name, but, Danny Triplett comes to mind as a former Clemson player who did not mind laying the wood when it came to hitting/killer instinct. Also, Jim Stuckey!!

I hope someone down there is capable of recruiting it...

Lately, not so much, especially on defense.

I know, I know... we're young. Yada yada yada.
