matter. Go as cheap as you can find. If you're going to actually drink to savor the whiskey itself, I'd suggest starting with a bourbon as opposed to a rye, Irish Whiskey or Scotch. Maker's Mark is a decent entry level bottle that you can actually drink over a couple of cubes of ice and a twist of lemon. There are much better, of course, but if you're testing the waters it doesn't make a lot of sense to drop $90+ on a really good bottle until you've earned enough of a palate to appreciate the different subtleties of fine whiskeys. If you want to go cheaper than Maker's, Rebel Yell is one of the most underrated wheated bourbons around, and drinks just fine using the same prep.

Jan 28, 2014, 3:33 PM

The mash bill has to contain 51 percent corn for it to legally be sold as bourbon, and then the remaining grains would be wheat, rye, barley, or a combination thereof. Good wheated bourbons are typically 70/30 corn to wheat.

I think you'll find that a much better transition and you'll be able to pick out flavor notes of different mashes as opposed to shocking your taste buds and then everything tasting the same. That's why you find folks showing off a high dollar bottle but mixing it with cola. They never built a palate and cheap tastes as good (or bad) as high quality to them.

Agree with RH, I sip bourbon on the rocks in a small glass.

Jan 28, 2014, 5:57 PM

Think the small glasses at nice hotels. That's where I get them. Cover 3 or 4 cubes with bourbon, sip, repeat as required. A Jim Beam rep at a tasting festival gave me the schpeel RH mentioned, that a lil water releases flavors from the bourbon. Maker's Mark is a good choice. My everyday bourbon is Elijah Craig, because it's 12 yrs old, 94 proof, and cheaper than similar bourbons here in Va.

Speaking of tasting festivals, keep your eye out for one this spring/summer and go. Went to one in Raleigh a couple years ago and it was awesome.

Well I am 55 Irish and from Kentucky

And what I can testify to from experience with my family and friends is the following:

Irish Whiskey is great- it will send you to hell quicker and haul your family to a place that they will curse your name at your funeral louder than just about any.

Kentucky Bourbon is smooth going down, maybe the smoothest and hopefully you like rock and roll because it will rock your life, business and brain to such an extent that you be a blubbering fool by the time your are 40. So get that education quick because you won't have enough brain cells to pass a Clemson into Sociology course.

But if you want to get there quickest and cheapest I find most lives are ruined most efficiently by straight Vodka.

But that's just my opinion from my short half century of experience.

I believe my brother was on that when he went through his bankruptcy and fourth wife so I would say it is is a formidable competitor to the others.

you say potatoes.

Jan 29, 2014, 9:20 AM

I say puhtahtoes.

if he had 4 wives, he NEEDED to drink my friend.
it seems he had more problems than you can attribute to just drinking. he didn't know when to quit getting married.

lastly, i'd say mental health problems run in your brother's family.

Re: you say potatoes.

Jan 29, 2014, 11:33 AM

Maybe........ but the drinking started in college before the first wife.

You don't understand basic cause and effect, which is in all of your science books, used to be in psychology books before they took out the word "responsibility"

Also, a basic understanding on your part of entropy from a scientific, historic and socio-psychological perspective would help you to understand the draw of alcohol to the downward spiral of man and his rebellion with God.

Ah yes and you do well with personal insults, sorry to hit a nerve.

for you a poem from a teen of a drinker

© Cody
Another day of life by the drop.
I pray to lord, help me stop.

I awake in pain, feeling shame.
Knowing soon again I'll play the game.

For the brief second with my self.
Before I walk over to that shelf.

I stop and think of all the things I do.
And the people I hurt while drinking booze.

I grip the bottle o' so tight.
I won't let go until the night.

All these thoughts rush through my head.
Loves and pride and things I once said.

I know it's from the former me.
The one that can no longer be.

It hits me hard, I cannot cope.
So drink until I start to choke..

Day to day, I live like this.
High to high and kiss to kiss.

I hope one day, the drunk will let me out.
And never again will I drink and shout.

Until that time I'll drown and hate.
I just hope that's not my final fate.

I'd start lower-middle or middle-class and work your way up. If you start on something like Maker's, you'll get spoiled to it and everything above it.

Honestly, the basics are a great place to start. Jim Beam. Wild Turkey. Evan Williams. I'm not saying they're the best - but you'll learn to appreciate Maker's and Woodford Reserve and Jefferson's better if you start with some training wheels.

Irish. It's about as smooth as it gets. Bushmills or

Jan 28, 2014, 6:22 PM

Jameson - you won't likely tell the difference (but true Irish drinkers will take those as fighting words).

Of course, I really love bourbon, and there are so many. Don't feel like you need to buy the really expensive stuff.

Just take it neat, on the rocks, or maybe with a bit of water. Stay away from the cola, 7up, sprite, etc.

badge-donor-10yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-snuffys.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

...I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent.

There is a difference.

Jan 28, 2014, 7:44 PM

Bushmill's is right, Jameson's is wrong. You need not know more than that.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like Irish also and have had several brands. Gotta agree

Jan 28, 2014, 8:37 PM

with RH Tig, Bushmill's is smoother. If you ever come across one called
Merry, it perhaps is even smoother, but harder to find.

Re: What's a good starter whiskey?

Jan 28, 2014, 8:40 PM

For starting out you can't go wrong with Maker's Mark. Buffalo Trace is also a lower priced bourbon that you can enjoy without mixers. Stetson's isn't bad.

I don't know where it falls on the price range but I got a bottle of Four Roses as a gift. I have heard people bash it but I thought it was pretty good.

For the next step up I second the Knob Creek recommendation. Heard good things about Woodford Reserve as well.

This weekend a friend and I are going to get Pappy Van Winkle for the first time. I'm excited to try it.

Re: one of life's lil disappoints. Missed their booth at

Jan 29, 2014, 6:08 PM

That was a pleasant surprise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd start with Jim Beam White with ginger and lime wedge

Jan 28, 2014, 9:08 PM

or do it with a splash of water and ginger and lime.

Beam Black is what I used to splurge on in college and still do sometimes. I still think it's very good. Bullet is another good choice.

Now, I keep a mid-shelf bourbon for normal drinking/tailgaiting and a top shelf like Bookers or Blanton's for more special drunken occasions with the old college roommates. FYI boubon enthusiasts Booker's is a BA uncut cask strength bourbon you have to check out. But in general, I am always getting new brands.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, does anybody else think Crown sucks?

Jan 28, 2014, 9:29 PM

overpriced garbage IMO, but then again, I haven't tried any canadian whiskey that ive liked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i have dranked a lot of crown with ginger for eons

Jan 28, 2014, 9:37 PM

one time i was bought a shot of crown and thought it was awful and that's being nice

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mrs No likes crown w/ ginger ale, and I think that mix is OK

Jan 28, 2014, 11:44 PM

but as you said, without mixer it's a disappoint.

For Scotch...

Jan 29, 2014, 10:35 AM

a reasonably priced blend with a smooth taste that I like is The Famous Grouse. Other, cheaper blends, to me are not even worth what you pay unless you just want to get drunk and remove the mucous layer from the back of your throat. You may find you want to try the expensive single malts later, but I think The Famous Grouse is a good belly warmer to always have on hand.

Oh and Rebel Yell.

Rebel Yell is not something most people buy for the taste, but I like it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably the most underrated wheated bourbon out there for

Jan 29, 2014, 11:24 AM

the money. Another fun fact...Rebel Yell was originally a Stitzel-Weller brand, in other words, it's right out of the Pappy Van Winkle family tree.

Also doesn't hurt that I've built years of loyalty as the preferred brand of bourbon starting with those first week of summer beach trips throughout high school and college. Schlitz on the beach all day, Rebel Yell when the sun went down.
