Trump concocted a group of people that sided with the racists & nazis, and wanted to keep up the RE Lee statue - but that were nevertheless "very fine people" in his view. This was Trump trying to thread a needle. But he essentially was looking at a group of racists, and trying to imagine that some of them were "very fine people."
This was Trump making sure to throw a wink at the racist part of his base.
And now his base has tried to rationalize it, and change the transcript to make him look better. It's a dishonest mis-read of what Trump was doing.

But then he concocted a group of "very fine people" who were being honorable in trying to keep up an RE Lee monument and siding with the racists & Nazis. Regardless of how you look at it, this paints Trump as sympathetic to a racist cause.

SO... Any intellectually honest person can clearly see that Trump never inferred or said that the "neo-nazi's are fine people". In the initial statement he clearly stated there were both "bad" and "fine" people in the groups. Three comments later, Trump explicitly said he's not talking about the neo-nazi's and white supremacists as being "fine people" and added that they should be condemned (I separated it and put it in all Caps for you to easily see).
Trump was correct - the were "fine" people on both sides of the argument to remove Robert E. Lee and there were bad actors on both sides as well.

He never condemned the actions of the bad actors, did he? He never specifically called out the white supremacists when they marched on Charlottesville, not a peep. That is what a good leader would have done.
He also never showed one-ounce empathy for the girl who was killed by a crazy man who drove his car through a crowd of people. That is why the optics were so bad on this. And course, when the capital riots were happening in real-time, he sat on his hands and waited 3 hours to send a tweet for these people to leave, at which point he said "I love you all very much, now go home".
And you guys want to put this guy back in office?

And I think it's somewhat because of his support of political violence that many of them like him....not "in spite of." Remember in 2015 and 2016, where he'd encourage violence at his rallies. Also, remember where he wanted to shoot protesters at the White House. Also, remember where he told police to "not be too nice" when throwing someone into the back of a paddy-wagon.
Let's also remember that in one poll after another, Republicans are more supportive of political violence than Democrats or Independents.

The only way one can get to "Trump called neo-nazis and white supremacists fine people" is to make a gargantuan false logic leap that EVERYONE who opposes the tearing down/removal of Confederate monuments IS a neo-nazi and/or white supremacist. To categorize EVERYONE that opposes the removal of Confederate monuments is a neo-nazi/white supremacist is analogous to categorizing EVERYONE that wants Confederate monuments removed as being Antifa - neither of which is true.
Look... Trump is a blowhard, narcissistic manchild that has said PLENTY of stupid shid through the years without having to make stuff up. His John McCain POW comments being chief among them. In twenty years left wing trash will be telling their kids about the horrible MAGA antisemitic uprisings of 2024 and how the evil dictator DJT was the one responsible.
