… renewed abuse of this dead horse. They’re the once who decided to re-broadcast the dang thing.
I calmly watched and analyzed with fresh eyes and neutral attitude until we scored the safety to go up 16-7 … we’re getting a free kick from their 20 that was going to put us in business around the 40-45 yard line.
SCAR was reeling … we were totally in charge … another Clemson score and they would have quit.
And then disaster. Someone on the staff decides to get cute with the return.
Sure it ‘could’ have worked and actually it did work until the fumble, but again the question has to be … WHY? Why even try it?
Honestly, we don’t need “cute” to win most of our games. Cute” plays are desperate things you try when other things are not working and you are behind and in danger of losing.
Just pounding away with our strongest weapons (Shipley, Mafah, and DJ on the ground) would have gotten the job done.
In retrospect it was so obvious. But by being cute unnecessarily, we let them gain new life when they were all but dead.
At that point (knowing the final outcome) I was getting a bit physically sick so I turned it off.
Please spot the ball for 2023 soon!

But ESPN re-broadcasts it and you watch it.
And then you complain that they re-broadcast it.
And then you watch it.
ESPN is then justified.

… but you jump to make a knee-jerk snarky reply.
I’m beginning to believe it’s your normal M.O.
But to help you out, I’ll just clarify.
If YOU want to complain, YOU may blame ESPN.
I’m not blaming ESPN for anything regarding my inability to suffer through it again.
HTH and you have a nice evening, okay?

A very thoughtful reply.
I an unfortunately conditioned to folks complaining about all things ESPN and I should let it go. And in part due to your comment - I will let it go for all things with the exception of Finebaum posts. If a Finebaum post is made, I reserve the right to snark.
That being said, upon reading the entirety of your post not once but twice - your analysis of the game happenings is well rrecapped and reasoned. We had many opportunities and I recall my frustration in watching it live - the only time I watched it.
I hope you have a pleasant evening as well.

I feel you, bro.
We all learn a bit more about football when watching rerun games.
Whether watching SC vs Clemson from last year’s game or not, I’m still sick about it.
If I’m going to be sick anyways, why not learn something more about FB while remembering the misery of the loss?

Stick to what you do well. That is one of the things I have always stressed at work throughout my career. When I got out of Clemson back in 1985, I went to work for Milliken. One to things they stressed on our Management Orientation Program was "Stick to the knitting". If we would have done that then we win the game. As you said... we got cute, and that killed us.

The fumble had Zero to do with the return. It was 20-30 yards downfield***

a play like that in a game you know you're going to win easily. (We're going to win anyway, so let's let the boys have a little fun.)
It bit us in the buttocks for sure - gave them life, when they had none.
As you said - it kind of worked until the fumble. So, maybe he fumbles anyway without the "cute"...
That game is still unbelievable

I don’t know why people say this play worked. It would have only netted an extra 10 yards if he hadn’t fumbled.

Especially having DJ throwing deep passes instead of running the ball really hurt us.

Amen. Did the secretaries not watch the coots game film and tell Dabo and Streeter they had not stopped the run all season?

Dabo has coached long enough to have had a few poorly coached games sprinkled in there every now and then. Very few, but some.
Last year’s SC game had to be in the bottom ten.

that didn't even complete 10 passes the whole game. Hence, OC and QB is now gone.

QB and WR (excepting A.Williams, who was average) were awful in last year’s SC game.
Streeter coached his worst game. TN game that followed was Streeter’s next to worst game. If Streeter had been a brain donor, he’d have had to pay someone to take his brain.
On the other hand, SC had the single best special teams play that I’d ever seen them have. Recovered two fumbles on kick coverage team. Their otherwise average punter had the best game for a punter that I ever saw in my life. Truly incredible.
In hindsight, SC’s bet-the-ballgame 4th and short gamble, with field position well short of midfield, turned out to be another game changer (field position) when Goodwin sold out to stop the sneak, leaving what we now know to be banged up Mukuba as our ‘fire extinguisher.’ Mukuba busted, field position flipped, Goodwin got taught a lesson.
The convergence of SC good luck (and ~ uniquely great ST play), combined with terrible games from Streeter, DJU, and our (typical for last two years) blah WR play led to the one point loss.
Regardless, it was a terrible loss.

Maybe so.
Lot of expectations on G.Riley and CK2, though … both of whom are unproven as Tigers.
