Clemson men begin NCAA Tournament on Monday

Clemson, SC—Jordan Byrd’s Clemson men’s golf team opens play at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, SC on Monday morning. The Tigers will play with the teams from Michigan State and Ball State May 13-15 on the par 70 course that measures 7084 yards All 13 teams in the field will play 18 holes a day Monday through Wednesday.
The top five teams after Wednesday’s third round will advance to the national championship tournament, May 24-29 at the Omni LaCosta Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.
This marks the 42nd consecutive NCAA tournament Clemson has been chosen, the longest streak in any sport in Clemson history. Clemson has been selected every year there has been an NCAA tournament since 1982. There was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID19.
Clemson players will start play on the 10th tee at 8:55 a.m. on Monday with Callahan Keever the first Tiger to play. Jonathan Nielsen is the last Tiger off the 10th tee with a 9:39 a.m. start. For Clemson fans wishing to attend the tournament the address 500 Finley Golf Course Road, Chapel HIll, SC 27514.
The 13-team field in Chapel Hill includes #1 seed North Carolina, the #4 ranked team in the nation, second-seeded Alabama, ranked ninth overall, and third-seed Georgia Tech, ranked 17th in the nation. East Tennessee State is seeded fourth and ranked 21st, giving the regional four of the top 25 teams in the nation.
Other teams in the Chapel Hill Regional include fifth seeded Northwestern, (6) Baylor, (7) Virginia Commonwealth, (8) Loyola Marymount, (9) Long Beach State, (10) Clemson, (11) Michigan State, (12) Ball State and (13) Howard.
The regional format of the NCAA Tournament began in 1989 and Clemson has advanced to the National Championship tournament from the regional 25 of the previous 34 tournaments, including six of the last eight. Clemson has made the national tournament 33 times overall dating to a 12th-place finish at Ohio State in 1980.
Clemson finished tied for fifth out of 14 teams at the NCAA Regional that Clemson hosted in Salem, SC last year. Clemson lost in a one-hole playoff to Texas A&M for the last spot in the national tournament.
The Tigers are led by senior Jonathan Nielsen, who has a 71.16 stroke average for the year in 31 rounds. He has 12 rounds in the 60s and 17 under-par rounds. Five times he has had a top 10 finish, with all five coming with top 8 finishes.
Andrew Swanson has a 72.68 average with two top 10s and two top 10 finishes, while Thomas Hiiggins has a 72.74 average with two top 10s. Alberto Dominguez has a 72.85 average and Calahan Keever has a 73.00 average. Swanson, Nielsen and Higgins will all be playing in their second NCAA Tournament.

Our boys need to giddyup now that they are making the turn to the easy front 9. Very disappointing we didn't take advantage of holes 15-17.

You can’t win the Tournament on the 1st Day . . . but you can surely play yourself OUT of it!!!
So far we are hanging in there, thanks to Calahan Keever and Jonathan Nielsen. I’m thinking we need to finish the Day near 6 Under as a Team to stay in the hunt.

Sorry to hear about the family issues. Hopefully not serious. Also prayed for you the other day that your doctor appointment was just routine.
Haha, I just snapped a screen shot too, just in case you were busy. How awesome would it be if we ended up with a big lead today 😲😲 . We are more than capable. Making Nationals would be a huge feather for coach Byrd to accomplish... especially given some of the talent we hope are coming in.
Ok guys, you missed chances on 17 and now 3. Dang, every player on east Tennessee and Loyola Maryland birdied 3. Wow, that'd be sweet.
Speaking of which, I get the feeling that Will Baker is enjoying the ladies... he is a good looking lad. Come on Thomas. Exactly what you can't have is 2 having off days. Dernit, first blue on the day.

Yes Sir. I'll take it. Not many strokes behind. I just get the sads fir Swanson because he hasn't had an ace round, but he's our defacto leader kinda like Pancake. And Thomas... darnit, both he and Andrew just qualified in us sectionals. Obviously played extremely good golf. Was so hoping that'd carry over into the first round today. Not saying it won't yet.
But as we've discussed, team golf. Gosh, we should have been leading.
Need a great 2nd round like our ladies had.

Guys have really played out their minds today. Sitting in great position for advancement.
Have to see how mother nature cooperates now. Just know Rd 3 will be a much different course, makes me very nervous given how this season has been.

Looks like they came to play and guessing the golf course suits them. I have not been to that course in a number of years and do not know how difficult it is now. From Google Earth Pro, it looks like there are a lot of bunkers, but many of the fairway bunkers look like they are too short to affect a lot of tee shots considering the kind of distance the college boys hit it now. Not really sure, but looking at the scores I'm guessing we did not get in a lot of fairway bunkers.

The Anderson DII Transfer has really stepped it up!!!
And I would love to see Thomas Higgins “hole out” on the Par 4, 482 yd, 4th Hole!!! Even with a 300 yd drive, the shot had to be ~180 yds out!!!!

When “Darkness” took over, we still had 2 TIGERS on the Course . . . Jonathan Nielsen and Thomas Higgins each have 3 Holes remaining in their 2nd Round.
Our TIGERS have played up to the potential that had been hidden for much of this season. Here’s to hoping the impending rains won’t hinder Our Efforts to Advance to the National Championship.
The “Tip of the Cap” will be held until the Mission is Realized . . . however, I am excited for the possibilities!!!
BTW - Tomorrow’s Forecast for Chapel Hill is RAIN ALL DAY . . . Hoping we get to complete this Event on Wednesday!!!

No matter what happens from here, Calahan deserves a big old tip of the cap. I'm so proud of him. The man came to play. Saddle up partner because it was indeed a wild ride.
I'll have to own up and be honest. I thought golfstats had gone bonkers or something... I really did keep waiting to see if a shoe would drop and scoring would be adjusted. But then I started seeing posts after dark and I think it's real. Still not sure if I'm dreaming.
I'm just hoping that at the very least we'll get to finish our round in the morning. It's surreal when you look at the team rankings and where we currently sit. Gonna be one exciting final round.

their 2nd Round this rainy morning, but they are still attempting to play the Final Round . . . and have started well, with the exception of Alberto. Plenty of time for him to rebound.
When this Tournament began, I was hoping we would be in a “dog fight” for the 5th Qualifying Spot . . . Never did I dream we would be contending for the Title!!! This is why we Tee It Up!!!
