Jim Phillips on the call :
Jul 28, 2017, 10:02 PM
|

I have wondered to myself what it would be like to be too young to never have heard Jim Phillips call a Clemson Tiger football game . This overdub of DW4 to Hunter Renfrow for the 2016 National Championship gives me chills . He was Clemson personified and when he passed it was almost as if a member of my own family was gone suddenly .

Mr. Jim Phillips

as a '68 Grad (December), I was is the Student Section in a coat and tie and did NOT hear his first call.... ...but I do remember his introduction and special voice at our Pep Rally.
FYI: Mr. Phillips came to Clemson in 1968 and broadcasted his first Tiger football game on September 21, 1968, a 20-20 tie between Clemson and Wake Forest. Phillips would broadcast his 400th Clemson football game on August 20, 2003 against Georgia, just over a week before his tragic death.
Go Tigers! RF

Back in the day when I was a kid/teen, very few Clemson games were televised. We listened to the game on the radio with Jim Phillips announcing. He was definitely a very talented announcer that would make the game come alive.

Was the same in my home . Dad wasn't a Tiger fan so if I wanted to get the Clemson game I most often had to listen to the radio broadcast in my room . Which I gladly did and enjoyed it immensely because JP was a guy that could perfectly describe the play but also paint the scene as he did so.

...on Saturday mornings to see what college games were on TV that day. The Tigers were rarely on, so it was Jim Phillips calling the game for me on the radio. And it was great.

Fall Saturdays, I rode around with my dad on the mail route during the 80s loved listening to Jim Phillips. Special moments I'll always remember with him. Had to listen to Leonard's Loser on the way to Death Valley when we went to the games with friends.

Jim Philips was in his prime one of the best. His later years he lost a little something, but his ability to describe was superb. He never lost sight of his audience and I know his greatest disappointment was not being able to actually broadcast our initial championship game.
Compared to most announcers today I rate JP far better. His voice has been greatly missed.
Go Tigers!

There will never be another voice that could come close to being a Jim Phillips voice on a radio calling a Clemson FB or basketball game. Honestly, I haven't listen to another Clemson game on a radio since Jim passed away in 2003. For me, it was really hard to believe that a person could love someone that I had never met face to face. But after Jim passed away in 2003, I knew that I had loved the person that owned that voice that I had listen to for many years on Saturday's in the fall. I would turn the TV on with the sound turn off and listen to Jim on the radio when ever we had a televised game. I knew after Jim passed away in 2003, I knew that I loved the man behind that voice on the radio when it was no longer there and it wouldn't ever be there again. It wasn't Clemson FB on the radio without that manly voice of Jim Phillips. I haven't turned the sound off on my TV since, and I haven't listen to another Clemson FB or basketball game on the radio since Jim Passed away, and I probably never will again. RIP Jim Phillips, and man I sure do that Voice. It was the voice of a man's man that I believe that all of Tiger nation loved!!!

Thank you for this. As a kid, we couldn't afford to go to

Clemson games and lived too far away. I listened to every game on the radio. Hearing Jim Phillips' friendly, smiling voice was comforting and familiar. Listening to him was like listening to family at the supper table. It was even better when I could listen to him while with uncle Belton. I cried when I found out that he passed away. Clemson football on the radio will always be Jim Phillips. The rare times that we did play on TV, I would turn off the sound, and listen to him. I remember the Tigers run to the Elite 8 in '79 (?), I watched the games and listen to JP. Dang that overdub is bittersweet.

It's cool how the person who made it found a bit where he uses JP's call on a play with Dechane Cameron at the foal line throwing a quick touchdown . Worked perfectly .

The voice of Jim Phillips

Listened to Jim call many a game for over 30 years. Great memories like some of y'all experienced.
Also, after Jim passed my brother and I were watching a Clemson afternoon game on TV during the Bowden days and when the announcer on TV started talking, we just looked at each other. The guy's voice sounded like Jim's and I said Clemson should hire this guy. I wish I could remember which game because I would like to have found out his name.

Yeah , DeChane Cameron was the QB in the 91' bowl game in Tampa where we blanked Illinois 30-0 . That call may have even come from that game but who knows .
DeChane is pronounced the same as Deshaun.

Mr. Phillips was a huge part of many of our lives. Before the Internet, ESPN, and so many games being televised, if you were not able to go to a game, you listened to it on the radio. I grew up listening to him every Saturday and many, many nights for basketball. And I know in heaven, he was calling that play. Go Tigers!

It is a travesty that he's not on the ROI
Aug 2, 2017, 7:50 AM
|
|
I know, he never graduated from a 4 year program.....would that have endeared him to the Clemson Family anymore than he did? NO, would it have made him more of a TIGER? NO! Please, someone with a million lying around wondering what to do with it....force someone with power at Clemson to place JP on ROI! No one embodies my clemson experience as a child, teen, student and 30 something more than Jim! God Bless him! And BTW, included in paying the $$ million, include getting rid of Don Munson.....the WORST BROADCASTER (except for Todd Ellis) in America.. thanks!
