Exactly, but, they can make about as much money from Clemson, FSU, and UNC in the SEC than they make from the ACC now.

And the contract has an opt out clause - for both sides - after the 2025 season. The ACC doesn't have an opt out clause with ESPN.

Fox because they could afford it and wanted to be a major player overpaid

for the B1G. ESPN was desperate not to lose the SEC and overpay for that. Now they are in position to cut other things like this. The problem is nobody is going to watch the the programming they sub in and nobody is going to watch SEC games just because they are broadcasting them. Fans are going to tune into their games/their leagues whether its ESPN, network streaming, CW, syndicate, school or league streaming, etc. Nobody is going this day and age is going to sit and be force fed USC vs Vandy or UGA vs Bama for that matter. The move to streaming is only going to amplify that.

Suddenly adding FSU and Clemson may become more attractive when looking to replenish that lost revenue

I don't blame them. Best to focus on CFB, the NFL and NBA.

Sagging ratings, sagging revs ...
Mar 28, 2024, 11:53 AM
|

Manfred said it (although he probably didn't mean to): Major markets are good for ratings, small markets aren't.
MLB needs to let small market teams die instead of buoying them with revenue share.
Kind of like the ACC needs to let Clemson and FSU go their own way instead of forcing them to share their revs with lesser programs to their own detriment.
In other words, let the market speak for itself, and let programs test their own value in the open market.

The regular season has become irrelevant. Win 105 games, your division by 15 games, and go out to a wildcard team who won 88 games in a short series.

Exactly. In 5 games.
The regular season is too long and the playoff format too whimsical.
