I went to UGA/LSU this weeked...my perspective & comparison

Sep 30, 2013, 10:49 AM

My wife grew up in Ga and was a life-long UGA fan. She attended a small college in Ga, but decieded to transfer and finish her last to years at Clemson after we met and got married. Saying all of that, we went to Clemson/UGA this year and she wore orange and cheered for her alma mater :)

Well, she has never been to a UGA game, and her mom happened upon free tickets to the game this past weekend, last minute. Well, we put on red shirts (so as not to get hurt lol) and cheered on the Dawgs this past weekend in Athens. A few things I learned about my trip to Athens and Sanford Stadium:

- Athens is an awesome town! I love how old it is and how much there is to do near and around the university.

- There seems to be more people in the streets and bars pregame than there are people tailgating.

- There is no areas right beside the stadium for tailgating. We got to the stadium 2hrs before kick, to walk around, and it was dead...nothing going on.

- Dawg Walk was ok, but nothing special. Everybody does this now it seems. Ho hum.

- The stadium itself hold about 10,000 more than Death Valley, but it doesn't seem bigger inside. I like how Death Valley is asymmetrical, as opposed to Sanford having a large press box/lux suites on one side and having a third upper deck on the other.

- You can't actually see most of the stadium from the outside. Unlike Clemson, where you can ride by the west endzone and see a mamoth stadium, Sanford is surrounded by walls and the like and doesn't stand out as a massive stadium.

- The concourse area, where I entered, had a lot more room than Death Valley's concourse area, which made it great for concesions, etc.

- No pledge to the flag and no prayer during pregame.

- You really appreciate the Hill entrance when you see UGA run through a banner out of the endzone, high school football'ish.

- Death Valley is a cleaner, more up-to-date stadium than Sanford. Only one video board, which changed right before everyplay to say "Get Loud" or the like, which meant right before snap, you had to search around the stadium to find another board with the down and distance.

- The fireworks and the cannon are such a big deal...when you see a game w/o them. I kept waiting for a cannon shot after each score that never came. lol

- I witnessed more dirtyness (if that's a word) in a quarter and a half at Sanford than I have seen in a lifetime at Clemson. I know this happens everywhere, but I haven't been around it at CU...a young lady, with-in 5min of kick-of, threw-up on the guy sitting in the seat in front of her. This lead to the guy and the girls husband almost coming to blows right there. There are other things that aren't appropriate to mention here...but a much different crowd at UGA games than at Clemson games in my opinion.

- The crowd was loud and into the game. Much like everywhere...every incomplete pass should have been pass interference. lol

- The crown isn't allowed on the field after the game, which lead to most of the crowd hanging out in the stands much longer than the Clemson crowd. At Clemson, you either run on the field or make your way to the exits I guess.

Really glad I had the opportunity to go experience something different, but wouldn't trade the Clemson gameday exerience for anything! Go Tigers!

Nice recap.

So is Death Valley louder?

Awesome about the girl throwing up on the guys shirt. cool story.

Death Valley is louder in my opinion. I was sitting in the

lower bowl and the upper decks seem to hang out over the lower bowl. Not sure if the noise carries better to the field, but from where I was sitting, Death Valley is the louder of the two, even minus 10,000 voices...although, LSU brought a lot of fans. The upper upper deck behind the LSU sideline was 90% LSU fans...thus the stadium prob only had 75000 UGA fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good comparison

Sep 30, 2013, 11:09 AM

Although I'd like to point out that by your description of Sanford it's asymmetrical and Death Valley is symmetrical :)

Huge college football fan and grad of both Clemson and USC Been to games all over the country all stadiums have their idiot fan bases and drunks and always will, think I've seen students throw up at just about every place I have been but some of my favorites

Tenn - sitting in that 100K plus stadium for a big game when Tenn is good with the river in the background etc is just a beautiful site

Clemson - the atmosphere is like none other - loud, family friendly, walking through campus to the game, the lake, the Walker course on a football weekend, a few years of fans leaving early when team was losing but not this year

Michigan - crazy history and loud but noon / 11am games just aren't for me

UGA fun town, loud weird stadium being somewhat below ground level

Ole Miss - not a myth, the walk through "The Grove" is worth the trip great atmosphere and eye candy while just like all schools there is plenty, however it is all in one place on Sat at Ole Miss!

Bama - a sense of elitism - 11 or 12 nat champs, they have history and understand winning Great stadium loud etc great fans (not the belligerent uneducated toothless radio or internet fans they don't seem to get to many games for some reason) pull up and park anywhere around campus stadium for 5-15 bucks

So Cal great history etc odd feeling almost as if they don't care but still crowded lots of pretty people

WB has come a long ways from a real concrete jungle and eye sore and I think many Clemson fans will be surprised this year

Love hearing college football fans stories from other stadiums and people who enjoy seeing new things with an open mind

I've heard Michigan has all those people but is NOT loud***

mention the same, to an even larger extent, at your "other" school. (although an online degree is worth more than that degree from columbia.)

Sep 30, 2013, 11:40 AM

I've been to 18 ACC and SEC home stadiums, including many times to Death Valley and Sanford Stadium. Also been to Notre Dame and West Virginia. My favorite, by a long shot, is Death Valley and mostly because of the hill entrance. Nobody else has anything like it. Everybody else comes out some version of a tunnel. My other favorites in order: LSU, Georgia, West Virginia and Ole Miss. The loudest of all were Clemson, LSU and Georgia. For what's worth, the best band pre-game shows are LSU and West Virginia. In fairness, I hit Notre Dame in a down year. At Georgia, they don't come onto the field but do rush to the hedges after a big win. Not the same as Clemson, but not bad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Curious, ever been to Auburn?

Sep 30, 2013, 9:26 PM

I would think the eagle circling the stadium would be pretty cool.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Some Georgia Thoughts...

Sep 30, 2013, 12:00 PM

- The concessions always, always, always run out of water at halftime.

- You're right, there's nothing special at all about their entrance. No build-up or anything. Very generic.

- Athens is probably my favorite college town. Awesome place.

- The crowd is loud, but not as loud as The Swamp or LSU's Death Valley.

- I remember when they put up that video board 10 or so years ago. We were in awe. But now it does look small in comparison to our own BeastBoard and lots of other boards around the country.

- No one can go on the field after the game, because the SEC would fine the holy crap out of them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

heck, with what y'all have as the comparison , ANY stadium

Sep 30, 2013, 3:20 PM

should rate an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10 .

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The concourse area had a lot more room !?!?!?

Sep 30, 2013, 12:22 PM

I have been to Sanford Stadium many times and this is not consistent with my recollection. In fact, I seem to recall the concourse area being very narrow and unusually crowded especially the concourse area behind the upper deck seating.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I came in gate 6 and the concourse are there is almost

Sep 30, 2013, 2:40 PM

traingle shaped. The gate is some 300ft or so from the actual entrance to the stands, and it opens up...a ton of room to mingle around and maybe 8 concesion stands there. This would be the corner of the lower bowl, corner of the endzone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never thought the Swamp was that loud. A lot has to do w/the configuration of the stadium.

A spectacularly beautiful day for a ball game. We got burgers and beers atLoose Change before the game. Fraternity boys we're having a blast. Tailgating was amazing. People were very friendly

Team running down the hill was awesome. I liked the pledge and prayer. I was surprised that the game was not sold out since Tigers are ranked no 3. I guess weak opponent plus poor economy had an impact.

Believe it or not the game experience was very much like that at UVA when our team is decent. My wife and I kept saying how similar things are. Just so many more fans in Death Valley. Clemson fans love them some Tigers. Virginia's stadium is a little bit nicer. UVA band is a little bigger and louder but Tiger Band plays all the time which is great. I liked the fans and players singing the alma mater down on the field. A really great day. Y'all come to Charlottesville next month and we will return the hospitality

That's cool to get the same perspective I gave of Sanford

Sep 30, 2013, 2:48 PM [ in reply to Re: I went to UGA/LSU this weeked...my perspective & comparison ]

to what you gave of Death Valley. I'm surprised that UVA's stadium is nicer(I've never been, so I can't argue with you). Obviously biased here, but I think with the addition of the WestZone and the two video boards there, as well a the rest of the look and feel of the stadium from your seat, that Death Valley is super nice place to watch a game. The concourse/concession area could def use some work, and maybe that's more of what you're talking about. I'd be curious to hear a little more of your comparrison.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree that Death VAlley is a great venue. Scott Stadium got

Sep 30, 2013, 3:03 PM

a complete makeover a few years back to add private boxes etc. Concourse areas are all brick and cast concrete so fit and finish may be a bit better. We have a hill too where students sit on the grass but players don't run down it of course. We have a cavalier on a horse to lead team on the field Stadium is right in the middle of school like at Clemson but we don't have nearly as much parking near the stadium so tailgating not as elaborate. With all the orange I felt right at home.

I noticed you mentioned hanging out in the stands afterwards. I don't think this is something common. They mentioned on the radio that it was such a special win that none of the fans were leaving...like it was unusual.
