Interesting read on Paul Dietzel

While the author (rightfully so) noted all of Dietzel's accomplishments, he neglects to mention that at the end of his reign Dietzel was one of the most hated coaches in Gamecock history.
He was so despised that he had a newsletter dedicated to him... G.R.O.D.-- Get Rid Of Dietzel.

Because you'll never win big there.....

it'll always be a stepping stone for a bigger job or a landing spot for a guy who's coached somewhere else earlier in his career when he made a name for himself. There is 100 years of sorry to average to above average football that has probably peaked out at it's highest. The Chickens are a program that just doesn't have anything special going for it in any form or fashion. No tradition, no atmospheric benefits....an urban sprawl of a campus, a warehouse district stadium, a tradition of good players bailing after their junior years, a piece of poultry for a mascot, and a fan base with a massive inferiority complex that has to latch on to a conference for anyone to give a #### about them. I'm born and raised in Columbia and have seen this my whole life. They are the eternal little man in their own minds and they are begging someone to notice them....as they see another season of expectations fall short of what they thought they were.....beautiful.

The only aspect with which I would differ is the "they are the eternal little man in their own minds".
On the contrary, in my experience, they seem to view themselves as an elite program while nothing could be further from the truth which is why they are so often widely regarded as some of the most deluded and ignorant fans in existence.

is a cover up for insecurity deep down.....they know that it will take years and years of winning big to ever be looked at with legitimacy by the nation in terms of football. It's a cover up. I grew up 3 miles from WB and was surrounded by Chicken fans for my entire childhood. Their baseball program is the truth, period. That is a beast of a program that can recruit itself on reputation. The football program will never be that and they know it. Clemson hasn't been nationally "known" lately (since the early '90's) until recently but we have things that are known nationally like the Paw, the Rock, DV, Orange, Purple, and just the traditon of Clemson football that comes with the name Clemson Tigers. It just is what it is.

Their hatred for anything Clemson even amazes me. Once I told them I graduated from Clemson, I talk to all my neighbors about everything but football. They hate that Clemson beat GA and then USuC lost to GA. I really think at this point they know they won't win the SEC east unless GA takes a huge dump...all they care about now is beating Clemson. If Clemson comes into that game undefeated it will be the biggest game ever in the history of Columbia and USuC history.

He accomplished more than any other coach in their history. At least they got a banner for a conference championship in his tenure which they proudly display with all their others (oops, sorry).

just passed away. It can't be easy to run a major college football program and the man did win a national championship! And though I have never met any members of his family, I'm sure, though proud of his football accomplishments, they treasure and will much more miss the kind of husband, father and grandfather he was.
