I had an epiphany last night

The way Bama was beating most people was the deep ball. We played off their receivers giving them the run until they were deep in our territory. Then not having to defend the deep ball we stopped the runs, or the passes. I'm sure it was planned that way, but I've never seen or heard it discussed as the defensive game plan.
The question is do enough other teams recognize what we did, and do they have the talent to do the same thing. If two or three of them do Bama may well be staying home from the playoffs.

I don't know if anyone has the talent to take advantage of this. UGA may but teams like LSU can't score any points so as far as the defense goes they may be able to limit Bama's points but even if Bama kicks a couple of FG they would win. Now Arkansas was able to put the second most points on Bama last year but their defense wasn't able to stop Bama at all. The Teams Bama needs to worry about most is TAMU and Auburn. Both of those can score a little and have plenty of talent on defense to make the game interesting.

We had the talent and depth to do that.

Without a doubt, defenses will focus more on the deep ball against Alabama and force Tua to be methodical and consistent. If he proves up to the task, they will brutalize their SEC opponents just like last year.

The snags for all others that get Bama are that NONE of them have a DW or a Trevor Lawrence , most of them aside from 1 or 2 can't match the Tide's physicality along the LOS and the real kicker is the depth needed to do 4 quarters against them ... it takes a lotta capable dudes .

CBV's plan worked well to not allow 'Bama to get behind us. There were two occasions where we were beaten deep. Other than that, the guys kept everything in front of them.
Early in the game, the announcers remarked about how tight 'Bama was covering our receivers. Herbstreet said, "Look how close 'Bama is covering their receivers! They are almost daring Lawrence to throw deep!" There were times when 'Bama dropped their safeties back only to have them caught flat-footed when Higgins or Ross sprinted past them.
It seems CBV had the better plan.

I think you’re incorrect in your analysis of Bama’s offense. They ran the score up and posted big passing numbers because they played a bunch of toothless defenses. Through the regular season, there were three defenses they faced that had a pulse. aTm, LSU and Mississippi State.
aTm wasn’t near as good at stopping the run but they could score and be competitive that way. Unfortunately for them, they showed their entire hand to Saban three weeks earlier when they played us.
I sat with a Georgia fan at a sports bar in Amarillo for the LSU game. We both wanted to see the same question answered : What would Tua do when somebody took away Bama’s run game, then actually plays man to man coverage on his receivers ? He didn’t do well. He was flushed out of the pocket repeatedly and had real trouble getting the ball to his receivers. He was replaced by Jalen Hurts in the 3rd quarter.
The saving grace for a Bama that day was that while LSU played good defense, they were completely anemic on offense. They would go three and out then punt it right back to Bama all night long. Eventually that defense bled out.
MSU was more of the same. Then comes UGA who brought their own offense and Bama was in trouble. I knew after watching that LSU game and the SEC Championship game that we had a significant advantage over the Tide. We had a defensive front seven better than any Bama had faced and we’d also bring an offense capable of turning it into a track meet.
But let’s go back to what made Tua look great. Most of his throws were to wide open receivers running to holes in a soft zone defense. And there was little to no pressure on him when he made those throws. Yes, there were a number of home run balls thrown but they would pick and choose those play calls at their convenience. It was invariably after Bama had established that power run game between the tackles and backside resources were dedicated to playing up closer to the LOS.
That situation was NOT going to happen against Clemson. We were simply deeper and better up front in the trenches and that vaunted Bama run game was only going to have a chance if Tua could first be successful on his own spreading us out......against pressure he’d never experienced........and against a secondary that was going to run toe to toe with his receivers. He wasn’t going to get uncontested lay ups. He was going to have to prove it and make the 3 -pointers from downtown first.
If he were a Trevor Lawrence, maybe he does that. .......But Trevor Lawrence, he ain’t.
