Cade Klubnik/tough kid/favorite memory

Cade Klubnik is, as you would imagine, a fantastic interview. But we were sitting there in the heat, just talking, when I asked him his favorite game in high school. Dude won two state championships and played in a ton of great games. But he told me it was the win over North Shore in the Class 6A Division I state semifinal in Katy Texas. To set the stage, North Shore had a 29-game winning streak and had won two state championships in a row, and they were favored to win a third.
Klubnik told me he tore the AC joint in his throwing shoulder on the second series of the game. The trainers all thought he had broken his collarbone, and he knew he couldn't throw the ball more than five yards. He told the trainers to brace it up, and he went back out and played. Once he was diagnosed with the AC joint tear (where the clavicle (collar bone) separates from the scapula (shoulder blade), he got a shot and went back out and played the rest of the game.
North Shore took a 21-17 lead with just over four minutes left in the game, and in an interesting note, it was the first time Westlake (Klubnik's school) had trailed all season.
Still hurting, Klubnik led his team down the field and they had a 2nd-and-goal at the 1. Stuffed. Third down. Stuffed. Fourth down? He kept it and ran around right end for the game-winning score with just over a minute to play. Sore shoulder and all. And sent Westlake to the state championship game against Southlake Carroll and heralded quarterback Quinn Ewers.
Klubnik didn't throw all week in practice, and he received two shots the day of the game and one at halftime. All he did was go 18-for-20 for 220 yards and a TD and ran for 97 yards and two TDs on the ground to win the title. He told me he couldn't lift his arm for a month and only in the spring started to feel a lot better. But that one game - that comeback win with a bum shoulder - was the best memory he had of his high school career.

That's the kind of guy you want on your team with the game on the line, he's been banged up a little, and refuses to get on the side lines where he actually should be, but he reaches inside his heart for that grit he knows he has, and He wins the game for his team, A Tajh Boyd toughness!!!!

Great read!!!! I haven’t had faith in a kid like this since Deshaun and Trevor. I hope DJ plays great this year but I know when Cade gets his chance he won’t look back. He will have the team ready to run through a brick wall for him because they’ll know he would do it for them. These young guys just got that it factor, country can keep sleeping on Clemson we will just have to remind them who we are

4th of July weekend a group of us went out to eat before fireworks. The kids in the group were middle school to high school freshman age. I heard one of the kids mention Cade Klubnik. Being in an area that is mostly UNC and Duke fans I sat there for a minute wondering how this kid knew who Cade was.
So I asked him how he knew who Cade was. A friend of his was a Clemson fan and they had been to a Charlotte Hornets game and Cade and Adam Randall were there. The Clemson friend recognized them and they were able meet them and get their picture with them. The kid in our group said he friended Cade on Instagram and Cade replies to his messages. He thought it was pretty cool and is a bit of a Clemson fan now.

Great story. Hopefully no long term effects on his throwing shoulder playing with an injury like that.

When we were recruiting him, I asked a close cousin

in Texas (a former high school football coach) his opinion of Cade, and he said if we got him, we'd hit a jackpot.
He added, "He's probably one of the toughest kids I've seen on the field...on offense or defense,"
I said, "You mean as tough as Japanese arithmetic?"
"Yep, that's what I mean," was his reply. lol

What comes to mind here is, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." Cade didn't. Cade won't.

your Field General. We might only see him in "packages" this year like DW4 his freshman year early, but I believe we WILL see him on the field.

'IF' DJ don't show much improvement this year over the year he had last year, Cade, or somebody will step into the starter position, bc, DJ will be on the side lines holding up play cards, or taking pictures of how it should be done!!!

I remember that injury. I think it was around the time Clemson offered him. I recall thinking that shoulder injuries are a tricky thing for a football player let alone a QB. He kept playing since it was the playoffs, so I can’t deny the thought occurred to me that his HS coaching staff was potentially impacting his college career. Fortunately he healed up fine. It certainly speaks to his character and desire to win.

His leadership skills showing from day one along with the mental and physical toughness. A true field general QB with that alpha dog in him. The kid has a bright future.
