the year. That time when the best golfers in the world arrive and ply their trade at the World's Most Well Manicured Horticultural Masterpiece, The Augusta National Golf Club.
If you have never seen it in person, trust me, television does not do justice to the beauty of the place. An esteemed golf writer, I believe it was Dan Jenkins, once said "The Masters is not really the Championship of anything. It is just simply the best golf tournament in the world." I would agree with that. Nothing is left to chance. The food is great, and actually priced so you don't have to be independently wealthy just to buy a sammich.
The crowd is impeccably well mannered, because if you aren't, you won't be there long, or ever again. The players, too, are on their best behavior. Let us not forget, The Masters is still an INVITATIONAL tournament. You don't HAVE to be invited. Just ask Phil Mickleson from a couple of years ago. (They say he didn't play by mutual agreement.)
The course itself is set up for drama, with the Par 5's on the back nine being reachable in two by the entire field. This is another reason The Masters in unique. It is the only Major that has a single, permanent home. Although the course does change over the years, modern players can still compare themselves to the greats of the past who trod those same fairways. (I, personally would love to see The US Open ALWAYS at Pebble Beach, or The Open Championship ALWAYS at St. Andrews. But, that will never happen. ) The PGA Championship? Meh, it to me has always just been a US Open wannabe anyway.
As the announcers sometimes admit, for this one week (Masters Week) out on the PGA Tour, the golf course itself is the star. As I said, if you have never been there in person, you cannot possibly appreciate the beauty and the impeccable grooming of the place. And, all the various types of flowers that somehow bloom right on time each year. TV, for once, got it right. It really is "A Tradition Unlike Any Other."
And, across the street, the Par Three Course, which hosts the annual Wednesday Par Three Tournament, is just as painstakingly cared for as the big course! But, Truth be told, that is one tournament the players try NOT to win, since no one has ever won the Par Three and the Masters in the same year. They might say they are not superstitious, but none of them want to tempt fate.
Bring on Masters Week!

I miss those days of going to Augusta and the Masters in April, parents had tickets with another couple from 1977 to 1996 but the ticket were under the other couple names and when the husband passed away that ended my days of going. The couple went to the Thursday and Friday rounds and I would go to the Saturday and Sunday rounds with dad when mother did not go.Had been to the Practice Round a few times since,2011 was the last time though.

Spot on 76er! I love the week too! That place should be a natural wonder much like the hanging gardens of Babylon. I remember the first time I went and as I was walking across 1fairway I had to reach down and make sure the grass was real. The greens were just unreal. We always got there very early and would walk the whole course with one of the first groups then go sit at the middle of 16 in the shade where you can see the approach shots to 15 and all of 16 for the rest of the day. There was a good tent close and cheap beer. Haven’t been in a while now and seem to enjoy it very much from my recliner
