Playstation Vue vs Sling Tv
Jul 29, 2016, 3:33 PM
|
|
I'm gearing up for the season, and found out Sling changed their sports package. Now the ESPNs are separated from the Fox Sports in their packages
Sooo . . I'm weighing and considering. Playstation Vue has all the ESPNs and Fox networks for $35 a month in their "Core Slim" package, whereas Sling has all the ESPNs in the Sling Orange Sports package for $25. The Fox ones are only on Sling Blue for $25- no ESPN- so that's out.
My quandary is while I watch some games on Fox Sports, it's not all that mandatory, so Sling at $25 could be okay. However, I've read about Sling buffering/stalling a lot in some reviews. If that's the case, it could be worth the extra $10 to have a smooth experience, plus the Fox sports, with Playstation.
I'm going with a trial week of both right now, but it's hard to get an accurate indicator since no one's really watching ESPN, etc. right now. I'd like to know how each handles under a heavy server load during live games.
Anyone try both during the season? If so, what was your experience?

I have sling and tied to watch the final game of the NBA finals on the ABC channel through a Roku and it was unwatchable due to what I believe was a server load issue. I still have it for now as I don't really get a chance to watch that much TV due to having two small kids, but I am holding out on crawling back to TWC until closer to our game cause that is the one thing I will watch regardless of how mad it makes the wife LOL. But after 16 years together she pretty much knows its not worth her arguing

You can't get any OTA channels for your locals?

I thought the Finals were on ABC. Maybe I'm confused.

@El Swann Just by chance we were having really bad storms that night so that signal kept going in and too, mostly out though. I live in a very wooded area and even with the expensive antenna I bought it doesn't work very well on really windy days. I've probably spent more time trying to get it to work during windy periods than I've actually watched tv lol

Have you tried getting two of the cheaper knock off

Leaf antennas, coupling them together from different parts of your attic? Then splitting that signal? Works like a charm for me and I NEVER have signal loss. I used to fight the signal time and time again. It might be worth a shot.

So I have a clearstream 4 antenna outside which is a higher rated antenna. I was doing research and I may need the "Juice" pre-amp they sell. My current amp is after the 100' run of cable from the antenna, the juice is amplified at the antenna, and it also reduces the signal from closer towers to prevent it from distorting the tower signals from further away. I'm not sure if this will solve my issue due to all the trees blocking my antenna, but it may.

care to use Fox...I don't care about there games. So sling is perfect for me. I saw every Clemson game last year on Sling.
As far as buffering/loading...just make sure you have an updated Router (ac-) and good internet speed and you will have no problems.

Playstation vue is the better deal

Also I've yet to have any bandwidth issues with Vue. You get more channels with Vue for a cheaper price. You would have to get both the orange and blue packages to even come close to what Vue offers.

No ones has had troubles with buffering with either?
Another thing that gets me leaning toward Vue is there appears to be commercials. Sounds weird I know, but it's odd watching football without them. We just just watched the 2011 Clemson/Cack game on SEC Network, and for that at least Vue had some commercials during the commercial timeouts. Sling just had an SEC Network logo for the duration of the commercial break (of which there are a lot).
We do get up for snacks/drinks, potty, quick household chores, etc. during commercials, but there's something missing when there's just dead silence during football time. It wrecks the scene, actually.
Is this how Sling works with live games in season, or are there comemrcials?

Oh, and I just noticed TigerinCH. Was the buffering trouble just with basketball, or were there some troubles with college football and Sling?

I have vue and I love it I have terrible internet but have only had it buffer once on me. Another good thing about vue is that it offers some free on demand shows so you can catch up on a current season that may not be on Netflix

A friend of mine has had sling for the last 6 months. In general he was satisfied with it. However because he is a big cable TV guy, he decided to switch to Vue. He loves Vue and is completely sold on it and tells me it is much better. I plan to switch over and give it a try this weekend.
And hey, they both have 1 week trials and you can cancel at anytime, so there is little risk to just try both before football starts.
But as folks has said, good Internet and a good router are a must!!

I have high speed Internet with comcast. I bought a Roku to run Sling since my smart tv is not as smart as it needs to be. But you can get an amazon firestick for less and my friend says his works just fine for sling and vue.
I have the $25 sports package with sling. The comparable package with Vue is $35 but you get more sports channels and other channels. Plus, I have been told it has a DVR type function....but I cannot confirm yet.
I made a Gray-Hoverman antenna for local channels.....I get 18 channels with it.
I did hard wire my tv/roku with an ethernet cable.

One thing to remember with Sling is if you go with the base package with ESPN, you only get one stream at a time. If you do the orange and blue for $39.99 you can stream up to 3 at a time. It is worth it to add the sports package which gives you ESPNU, ESPNNEWS, etc. I spoke with Sling on the phone and they are in negotiations with ABC and CBS to be added. They already have NBC and NBC Sports. Their buffering is almost a non-issue now. It used to be really bad when everyone was turning on to watch The Walking Dead. I love Sling.

From Vue's FAQ...
Can I record/DVR live TV programs? Yes! By adding your favorite shows to “My Shows”, you will automatically save them for up to 28 days after they air. On Demand content added to “My Shows” will be saved for varying amounts of time. Note: Some “On-Demand” and “DVR” programming availability will vary.

Hey thanks! I like that featue a lot considering my schedule varies so much. My sling expires on the 31st, so I will try Vue for a month and then decide which way to go.

access to ESPN3
so with your sling account, you can download the WatchESPN app and have access to all of that content as well

Any idea on how to get a WatchESPN to work on a SONY Bravia Smart TV?

Besides hooking a real computer up to it.
I have seen that it is an Adobe Flash issue, recently found out that was the issue I was up against when I used SlingTV during the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Buy an Amazon TV, Amazon firestick, or roku. There are other options but I am not familiar with them.
Your Smart TV is not smart enough. I had the same problem.

option. I had a trial of both at the same time, and stuff that would buffer constantly on Sling ran smooth as glass on Vue. The Vue's cloud DVR function alone would make it a better option (30 days to watch whatever you "record", and I think the amount of shows you can record is unlimited as far as number). I believe Vue just added a Roku option as well. Vue is what I plan to use this football season.

I reccomended ethernet to WiFi in anything you do on the net , especially sreaming media. Up to 20 times faster and no LOS issues.
I would plug my phone into my router if I could.

FYI I dropped sling today after testing the Vue last night. It was a better picture (not a single buffer or pixilation), more channels (medium package), better channels, and the ability to stream on a second tv via a chromecast and my ipad (primary tv uses a hardwired Roku). The chromecast was as good if not better of a picture than the hardwired sling was.
