First time camping in 25 years, give me the basics

Taking the kids camping this weekend for scouts. I haven't been camping since college. Kids have never slept outside.
Can somebody point me towards the camping starter pack? I want to spend the minimal amount of money while ensuring the maximum amount of comfort for me. Also seeking advice on the following topics: - What tent to buy for 1 adult and two smallish kids - How to not lose the kids during the day or at night - Quick food prep options - Is it cheating to bring a lighter as part of the fire-building exercise - How to keep the kiddos warm and less miserable - How much liquor I'm allowed to bring on the trip (for warmth)

It's cheaper to rent an RV for the weekend

Kids are supposed to help with the tent setup. Perhaps I can let them drive the RV around the field a bit?

You should have everything you need in your tailgating

supplies minus the cot/air mattress and possibly tent. Or are you not a real fan?
Honda generator, minimum of 32" TV, DISH tailgater satellite, misting fans, crock pots, and propane heaters you should already have.

Its possible to go a weekend and only drink beer. I consider it a "cleanse".

First time, huh?

You hand each kid a sheath knife, a ball of twine, a roll of duct tape, and a lawn-size garbage bag. Push them out of the car on Friday afternoon and then show back up at the designated pickup spot on Sunday afternoon. The kids that survive are worth keeping, the rest were going to drag you down anyway. Meanwhile, you slide on down to the nearest Holiday Inn Express and enjoy the week. YOU'RE THE FREAKING BREADWINNER FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS...WHY ARE YOU SLEEPING ON THE GROUND?!!!??

its going to be in the 20's this weekend fool!

not the best time to "break into" camping.
winter camping equipment is EXPENSIVE!
good sleeping bag.
Cot or pad to get you off the ground (comfort and retains heat)
Tent is not gonna help much other than keeping the moisture off of you.
instant hand warmer packs.
do not sleep in your clothes. lay clothes in sleeping bag and sleep in underwear.
food.
hobo dinner wrapped in foil. Get bubba burger, cheese, onions, peppers, potatoes corn etc. Wrap in tinfoil and place in coals of campfire. Eat.
Tacos in a bag. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/20852/taco-in-a-bag/Taco in a Bag Recipe This flavorful taco treat is a perfect snack to enjoy while mobile. Picnics and block parties are perfect venues for Taco in a Bag.
omelets in a bag. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/85107/omelet-in-a-bag/Omelet in a Bag Recipe Great for holidays when there are picky eaters in the crowd. Can make as many as needed or just one if you like. Got this from an internet friend. Good served with fruit and coffee cake.
dessert. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/264042/3-ingredient-cake-mix-cobbler/
Go buy a bunch of those glow sticks from dollar store. The kids love them and YOU WONT LOSE THEM IN THE DARK.
Bring lighter. Stove, grill, whatever.

I pay for someone to landscape my yard and clean my pool. It's going to be a bit of a culture shock this weekend.
Am not looking forward to it. Adding two miserable kiddos will only compound it. Returning home with the flu is icing on the cake.

as someone else said, fleece, wool socks, toboggans, and gloves. Those hot packs for pockets will do wonders.
once a 6yr old decides he's cold, there is NO going back.
Keep them busy, warm and fed.

Black Diamond or Petzl Head Lamps for all. Roll out mattress cheaper than air mattress but not as comfy if side sleeper. You want to stay warm and dry . camping supplies ain't cheap. Go to local backpack store ...many give discounts for scouts . get freeze dried camp food and jerky, nuts, for snacks. Tell them where you are going and seek advice. May want a day pack too. Tell them you don't know if this is a one time only trip so you want to watch your spending. Find out about camp grounds water ( is it drinkable). Nalgene water bottles.
What kind of cooking is the troop doing? Group cooking then you may only need snacks. If you are cooking for your kids then you will need a stove and pot to boil water in. Many freeze dried meals double as the bowl... Stove, water pot, utensils,3 plates. Towels ( maybe). But you got to stay warm and dry. Wools socks, I would not wear jeans, fleece, maybe down or synthetic jaclets and rain shells ( hard shells). Take other clothes to sleep in. Definitely need head lamps with the kids.

Will have facilities and water. I assume other dads are bring propane, plus we'll be making a fire. Might prep some chicken tenders and sandwiches in advance, and bring hotdogs / smores type food.
In college we could rent a tent from Fike. Also chose not to camp when it was 20 friggin degrees out.

Your local camp store may rent equipment. That would be great for the tent. Doesn't sound like y'all ar hiking far to the camp site so You can rent a 4 person tent I'd do it. They may rent sleeping bags also.
If you buy a cheap tent, most likely you will need to seam seal it and allow it to dry. If you rent one then that has already been done.
Good tents will cost. Cheap tents are heavy as a bail of hay. I'd rent for this if I could.
I'd go for at least a 20 degree bags. It might get cold that night ( don't sleep in the clothes you've worn all day because they will have moisture and better chance of getting cold ).
Don't wear cotton. Once it gets damp it stays damp.
