Venables on stopping Shaw: "We tried everything"
There was no shortage of emotion and frustration from defensive coordinator Brent Venables after Saturday night’s loss to South Carolina as he talked about Clemson's inability to stop the running of Connor Shaw. Photo by Jeff Blake / US PRESSWIRE Full Story » |

people get too worked up about putting a spy on Shaw
Shaw is a very accurate passer and a very good runner, he runs the zone read with prefection, you devote a guy to stop him from runninng and he will pick you apart through the air. That is why he is so effective and has won so many games.
I just can't stand when people act like things are just so easy like, "just put a spy on him and shut him down", yea right. If that was all it takes everyone would be doing it and he wouldn't be their programs all time win leader.

I think you are all over this. We do not give Connor Shaw enough credit. He was the difference in the game (along with our turnovers). I thought the team played hard and physical. I did not see all of the break downs on our line play that everyone else keeps referring to. I must have watched the wrong game.

People think that spies can't be blocked for some reason. Like if you call them a spy they are always going to have a clear path to that person. Shaw was successful because SCar did a great job of blocking for him all night...spy or no spy.

I think he used Crawford for that job. Shaw saw that and eluded Crawford all night. Probably should have used other players and kept Shaw guessing who was spying. No corner containment in this game from anyone in white!

like he wanted a sack on every play?
Shaw just exploited the overly aggressive ends on almost all of his runs.
I think if there was a spy, it should have filled the hole Vic gave up every time he went outside. When Vic went inside, Shaw just went out and there was no one there either.
It was like watching Clemson from 2009/2010 all over again. Pathetic.

BV has made some strides with the defense. However, they had some issues with stopping Tahj. CS is a little better field general than Tahj abd in my opinion has a better and more experienced QB coach in SS. To be tied in the 4th quarter was my goal. We just fell apart otherwise.

score 17 to 20 points and we score 35. Their longest offensive plays were punting the ball to us twice and having us muff/fumble it.
Third down conversion was bad, but improved over the course of the game. If we held on to the ball, I don't think it would have beaten us.

40 minutes out of 60. Didn't force any turnovers. Rarely hit Shaw hard, even on his runs. Got toasted by the wildcat passing plays. Shaw was doing most of his running up the middle...which makes me think a delayed blitz up the middle on occasion might have been a good idea. All 3 units did their part in the loss (offense, defense, special teams). I think the special teams fumbles were the biggest killers though, because they came after the defense actually got a stop and before the offense could get back on the field. But all three phases needed to be better. Defense still has work to do, but overall this year has been better than where we were previously.

first down and one on 2nd down. Even if we gain zero yards on those four possession we would likely burn 2 minutes of clock on eachone = 8 minuts to us, and away from them. So then it is not 40 to 20, but 32 to 28, pretty even.
Not making excuses, but just saying I think D held their own, but didnt get much help.
SCar's biggest plays was punting to us, and have us muff/fumble it for a 40 yeard gain.

You really never know what could have happened. After the turnovers when Carolina had the ball they could have easily fumbled and given it back to Clemson, but that doesn't necessarily mean that either team would have scored.

Bottom line is:
We sold out to stop Davis and we did.
Did we forget to scheme for Shaw and the wide receivinbg corp?

This game was not on the defense. Sure there were things they could have done better but they kept us in it. Even against FSU they gave us several chances to get back in it. Problem is and was the offense mainly BC Tajh is scared unless we're playing Wake or UVA.

Our defense didn't lose the game for us. Turnovers lost the game for us. Sakerlina is a good offensive team, and they made their plays. We made some, but Im pretty sure it's impossible to win a game with a -6 turnover margin.

Why try a ""trick-play""----when your offense is ramming it down their throats, running & passing ???????????? --- IF we score first,we quite the ""white hankies"" , and it's off to a win !!!!!!
__instead,we try a ""trick-play"" on the opening drive, like we did in Atlanta, against LSU ( lost Sammy & the ball )___ and swing all the momentum to the other team ???? WTH ?????

Look how much time the defense was on the field. By the 4th quarter they were tired and it showed. Out coached, out played, and out conditioned by the only two teams with 8 or more wins on Clemson's schedule. And Clemson was soundly beaten by both Florida State and South Carolina by an average score of 42-15.
As much as I like watching Boyd play, the greatest QB in Clemson history is Homer Jordan. He not only brought home an ACC title, but guided the TEAM to a national title.
