Augusta Restaurant Recommendations... not football related..
Jan 30, 2021, 5:29 PM
|
|
I know this isn't football related, but it is the offseason afterall. The wife and I are spending 2 nights in Augusta in February while she has some studies at Augusta Med. Thought I would take her out for a nice dinner, any suggestions? No commercialized chain restaurants - we like to find the local hole-in-the-wall places.
If I have a chance, I may look for a place to have a good cigar to kill some time, any smoke friendly recommendations are also welcome.
Never been to Augusta... Thanks.

Agree on the French Market Grille. I like their crab chop. There used to be two FMG’s. Go to the one near Augusta National.

I saw her once back in the 80's. She must be pretty old by now. Heck, she was pretty old back then.

Luigis 3rd generation family owned ( I believe still same family running it) Italian. Lot of masters golfers used to go there in the old days. Pictures on the wall. Same location downtown from the beginning.
Sconyers BBQ has been in Augusta forever. Large portions. Good pulled port BB. Same location on south side of town for probably 40 years.
Another long time family owned deli- Hildebrants, open for lunch only, used to be a grocery store back in the day. I believe it’s in 3rd generation as well, been in same location for forever, downtown.

As others have mentioned, Rae's Coastal Cafe is a hole in the wall place with great food....the only place that actually calls it by it's real name FROGMORE STEW (Beaufort Boil and Low country Boil).
Also has outside seating, maybe you can smoke Cigar, I don't know

I cannot help you out on the cigar spot but I can on the food. French Matket Grille at Surrey Center is my go to place. I like the Crab Chop and Seafood Au Gratin. I had the stuffed trout last night for the first time and it was good but ranked third for me behind the other two dishes. They also do a good Poboy. Also in Surrey Center is Calverts that has been around forever and has a sunset special. Their Filet Mignon is incredible. The atmosphere is also better than at Tbones. For Italian in the same location is Olivianas. We are very fortunate to have some very good restaurants in Augusta.

I forgot to say that you will get a good meal at any of the restaurants mentioned here. It boils down to personal preference. I have not gone to Luigi’s since COVID but, that place is like stepping back in time. Very nastalgic. I like their Greek Chicken. If you go there just be mindful that you are in downtown Augusta. So after dark park close to the restaurant. Since COVID, many of the restaurants mentioned on here require reservations. So check ahead. I was able to walk into the French Market last night without one but, it was early.

As an Augustan, I agree with most of the restaurant recommendations you've received. I would also add Calvert's for fine dining. It's in Surrey Center where the French Market Grille is also located. The very best casual place for burgers is the Whiskey Bar & Grill downtown on Broad Street.
For a good cigar shop, my husband frequents Top Shelf Cigar Shoppe at 3957 Columbia Road in Martinez. They have an impressive humidor and comfortable smoking lounge. It's just off Washington Road and a few miles from Augusta proper. Well worth going a bit out of the way. Depending on the time of day you might find a few Tigers there ">

I moved away from Augusta over 10 years ago and was surprised to find so many of my old favorite restaurants still around. I frequented many of these establishments during the 15 years I lived there. You don’t have time to visit them all, but one that stands out and was one of my favorites is French Market Grill. Several people mentioned entrees that are always excellent...one of my favorites (if it’s still on the menu) is Blackened Grouper. Someone else mentioned their Peanut Butter Pie...that dessert is as good as you will find anywhere. I used to always get an order of crawfish for an appetizer and if I didn’t have to go back to work, they have a Cajun Martini that is like nothing you’ve ever had anywhere.
