Clowney

|

While he is a good player, he can be beat. We have to use his aggresiveness against him. I watched the GA game, and I honestly dont remember seeing them ever run at him. Because of this, he wasnt hardly being blocked. And he was able to use his speed to track down plays. We need to run at him, make him fight through tough blocks. If we do this, he will get tired and wont be as lethal as a pass rusher. I have faith that our Offensive Tackles can push him off the ball on running plays. But, if we ignore him and run away from him, he will have a good game. Another thing to remember, GA's freshman running backs looked scared when trying to block him. I can promise you, Ellington wont shy away from picking him up.

I sure hope that will be a way to slow him down. B/C he was in the UGA back field almost every snap.

On the only series I watched, UGA's left tackle kept trying go low on him. Clowney is an acute player and guess what, he just hopped over the block. 3 dang times that I remember, and the left tackle kept trying to go low.

I agree that's one way to neutralize a speed rush. The other is to use screens. Georgia did neither one.

Yea Georgia looked completely and utterly bumfuzzled by everything USuC did Saturday night. I honestly am shocked that the Gamecocks only scored 35 because the Dawgs were WAYYYYY off their game.

Trying to make Clowney fight off tough blocks is
Oct 9, 2012, 8:23 AM

decidedly a great idea. Unfortunately, I've not seen too much that he considers tough blocks. Someone above mentioned that he was jumping over the left tackle... He was jumping over the RB while BEATING the left tackle's block. They ended up TRIPLE teaming him to stop him late in the game.
Also, if you think running AT Clowney is a good idea, that's also not good. He is fast to react. A draw play to the left is good. But he's very quick to disengage from the QB and drag down RBs in the backfield as well. He is a freak of nature.

Georgia taught everyone what was a costly lesson for them: don't try to chip him with a running back. 2 lineman on him, minimum.

I don't know how much this means when it comes to running a draw to the left side, but Clowney is left-handed and his strongest move is to the inside. I think the fact that he is left-handed is another issue for offensive tackles because his strongest moves are typically opposite what an OT would expect. Also, lefties are better at abstract thought (creativity) - prolly means the dude is unpredictable in his moves. He is quite simply a badass freak.

They ran right to Clowney's side early in the first quarter

he was right in the gap the RB was going to take waiting with open arms. Ended up being a 3 yard loss.
Couldn't find a video on it but that may have contributed as to why they didn't run to his side much.
Although Clowney (and Taylor for that matter) are the strength of the D-line, the interior lineman hold their own.

Part of it is that Clowney is not as weak against the run as everyone assumed he would be. He is still a little light for a DE but he is freakishly strong and stands up to run blocking pretty well. Its not a major strength of his but it isn't a big weakness either.

Then the LBs plug holes on running plays and the QB runs for his life on passing plays.

USC has a good defensive line but another way to neutralize that is to throw quick passes and make them run sideline to sideline. Clemson does a lot of that

the Coot pass rush. We typically "spread the field" which offers the OL no help in blocking a talented DL. However, Morris has been pretty good at scheming against talented DL's so hopefully not a big deal.

ae does a very good job at helping out on the pass rush, and hot rod is steadily improving on this aspect of the position. ford and cooper play a ton of snaps at the tight end position, often times helping out the line before getting into their routes.
