Clemson Wrestling

Jan 25, 2016, 8:54 PM

didn't you old timers say that we used to have a team at Clemson? I have been working the NDSU duals recently and it's been my 1st experience with college wrestling. I find it pretty interesting but also I don't understand the technical aspects at all.

I see that NC State has a top 5 team and is tearing up the ACC.

is this something you would like Clemson to get back> I know it's not likely at all

the wrestling mats must cost too much.

We had our first national champion

in any sport in the mid 70's - Noel Loban. We also had a two-time national champion after I graduated in 1980.

We were good for several years. I think they got rid of the team in the 1980s. Part of the reason was that they were unruly on campus, frequent fights. And no, I don't have a link, but I watched one of the wrestlers in Johnstone B8 bloody a guy's face.

Dropped due to Title IX--Womens Equality

Jan 26, 2016, 1:25 PM

We didn't have enough women sports to balance out the equation & it was dropped. This is why we added women's golf & ROWING...Hartwell is a 'free' venue. We won't add softball because we would need to add back something on the mens side---I think wrestling would be a great option even if I have no interest in it personally.

Title 9 or watching two men fish cost us any chance of something like that.

They dropped the team after '95 season. Title IX was a factor, the coach was also fired after a rules violation during the season as well. Really sucks b/c it happened a year removed from Clemson finishing in the top 10 at the NCAA's (pretty good for a southern school) and had a highly ranked recruiting class that was highly ranked.

College wrestling has it tough b/c they are an easy target for being cut, whether for Title IX or other reasons. And there are some programs that get done dirty in the process (i.e. - Oregon and Nebraska-Omaha). Hopefully it'll make a turnaround with the growth in the youth and high school levels and hopefully one day they'll bring wrestling back to Tigertown.

same thing happens in men's tennis

Colorado cut their men's tennis program the year after finishing in the top 30. Arizona State did the same thing a few years later.

I remember watching our heavyweight (6-10) skinny guy take on NC State's 470 pound Tabb Thacker, the NCAA champ human pear. Thacker won by falling on him and crushing him. That was about 1984. I hate that we quit on those guys.
