Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

Nov 8, 2013, 9:07 AM

In his latest projections, CBS Sports' Jerry Palm has both Clemson and South Carolina playing in BCS bowls: the Tigers in the Orange Bowl against Oregon, and the Gamecocks in a Sugar Bowl rematch against Central Florida.

For Clemson to end up in the Orange Bowl, won't we have to beat SCAR?? Can a 2-loss Clemson still go to Miami?

For SCAR to end up in the Sugar Bowl, won't they have to beat Clemson?? Can a 3-loss SCAR still end up in New Orleans?

And ... what incentive would entice the Sugar Bowl to rematch SCAR and UCF under any circumstances??

CBS would put SEC in every BCS bowl if possible.***

the ONLY way both make a BCS game..........

Nov 8, 2013, 9:11 AM

clemson wins out (ie beating south carolina)

south carolina wins the SEC.......it's already likely they're playing in the championship game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I think they can.

Nov 8, 2013, 9:14 AM

Only if SC were to win the SECCG, and/or beat Clemson, and get in as an at-large. Clemson could lose that game, and still get in as at-large. Is it possible that they could set up a rematch in the Sugar or Orange Bowl? Highly unlikely, but it would be fun.

With FSU going to the championship game as long as Clemson is in the top 14 they will most likely be selected by the Orange bowl. Remember the ACC just signed a long term deal with the Orange bowl and controls rights for the next 12 years. No the ACC doesn't get to determine who they pick but it will be difficult for them not to take an ACC team. At 11-1 we are a lock for a BCS bowl. Possibly even Sugar, but a 10-2 Clemson team still in the top 14 may still be selected.

null

I think that's unlikely.....

I think the only way $CU gets to a BCS Bowl is to win the $EC Championship. Even if $CU beats Clemson, a loss in the $EC title game probably sends a three loss $CU back to the Outback Bowl or the Gator Bowl. I think a two-loss Auburn ora one loss Bama team would be the more appealing choice for the Sugar Bowl.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Carolina won't go to ATL.....

Nov 8, 2013, 9:37 AM

and if they do, they will be crushed by Bama.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think there is a strong likelihood that....

Nov 8, 2013, 9:56 AM

$CU manages to back-door its way into the $EC Championship game as the result of another Missouri and Georgia loss.

That said, if they do get there and face Bama, I do think Bama would curb stomp them.

I honestly think they will make it.

Nov 8, 2013, 11:03 AM [ in reply to Carolina won't go to ATL..... ]

And they will get crushed by Bama 28-0.

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

It is fairly simple

The only way USC gets a BCS Bowl and these projections favor this scenario is:

USC wins out yes beats Clemson and Mizzou or UGA win the SEC East go to Atl and get beaten by Bama

In this scenario USC will have beaten FLa and Clemson moving them from # 11 /12 to # 7 / 8 sitting there when the BCS bowls pick

only way a USC team losing to Clemson makes the BCS is to back door into the east race and go to ATl and upset Bama

I don't think any of the analysts are making their projections on this scenario

They see a more physical USC team at home beating a Clemson team that has 2 wins over teams with winning records

Facts are who knows, neither team has wins that look very good to date. If you go off of ranked teams maybe Mizzou looks good but they don't have a good resume either

I think Clemson is a lock for the Orange Bowl.....

win or lose to SCAR.

SCAR would need to win the SEC for a BCS game. The Sugar is stuck with the non-AQ selection. Meaning they will most likely have to select UCF. The sugar bowl will avoid this rematch at all costs and will opt for Auburn, LSU, or Missouri.

The Big Question is whether we would get in the Orange

Nov 8, 2013, 9:59 AM

Bowl over a 2 loss Miami team? That would be tough. We would both have to be in the top 14. Both of us would, imo, if we lost one more.

Still, in addition to losing to FSU again, I think Miami loses to either VT, at Duke, or at Pitt.

Late losses hurt worse than early losses, which is why I think Miami losing in ACCCG would drop them below the Tigers even with a loss to SCAR.

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

Nov 8, 2013, 9:36 AM

I don't know about SC but given the games yet to be played I could see Clemson's BCS ranking being 5 or 6 before the SCAR game. SCAR would likely be Top 10 BCS as well. Even if that game turns out to be a loss, it would be against a top 10 BCS team on the road and I don't see how the Tigers drop from 5 or 6 to anything less than 13-14. That could still get a BCS bid given that Clemson could be best available ACC team if FSU is in NC.

i think if Clemson loses to USC and Miami wins out, but loses to FSU in the ACCCG, they could still be ahead of us in the BCS. i think USC has to beat us because they still trailing A&M, LSU, Auburn & Missouri in the BCS rankings.

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

Nov 8, 2013, 9:46 AM

That is interesting with Miami vs Clemson should both be 10-2 coming off losses

Miami would have a win over Fla and nothing else

Clemson would have a win over UGA and nothing else

Miami would have 2 losses to FSU and possibly 2 ugly losses to FSU

USC is not good enough to beat Clemson badly if at all

Should FSU blow out Miami and USC barely beat Clemson I say Orange is Clemson's all the way

Now that is only for a scenario that Clemson doesn't blow out a USC team in the top 10

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

Nov 8, 2013, 9:50 AM

I actually don't see any scenario where USC gets a BCS bowl win or lose to Clemson

Even with a Win (which is a big if) why would Texas A&M, Mizzou, or Auburn not be a better draw to the BCS

A loss equals what one projection has and that is USC dropping all the way at 9-3 to the Gator Bowl and the 7th best SEC team

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

Nov 8, 2013, 10:05 AM

Well, Texas A&m still has to play at Mizzou and LSU. Mizzou is at Ole Miss also. Auburn still has to play Alabama and Georgia and at Tennessee for that matter. Those teams could and probably will all have three losses. If they each lose one, SC is in with only two losses.

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

Nov 8, 2013, 10:03 AM

With two losses to currently unranked opponents, USC would have to win the SEC title game. Any bowl game is meaningless to CU with another loss to USC. Go Tigers!

Re: Can both Clemson and SCAR end up in BCS bowls??

And to that matter Clemson has only ONE win over a team with a winning record, 5-3 Georgia.
