One single play cost us the game.
The fumble for TD was about a huge a swing as you can ever imagine.
We were rolling and about to go up by two scores going into 4th Q with all the momentum. We may have run away with the game.
Instead…it’s a tie game and FSU has all the momentum. Stadium deflated.
Seems obvious, I know. But everybody seems to be nitpicking everything else.
It was one play. And credit to FSU. It was a great play by their guy. Perfect hit. No one would’ve held onto that ball.

Agreed. I get what OP is getting at and the impact of that play was no doubt significant. But I can think of a handful of plays late in the game, several of which included coaches’ decisions that negatively impacted the game.

You can point that out, but we were in a position to overcome that. You don’t get beat on one play. Play to win, call offensive plays aggressively and we win the game on a walk off.

If not for that one huge turnaround play, we win the game.

If not for a missed field goal we win the game If not for the prevent at the end of the first half we win the game
If not for Wiggins getting hurt because we left too much time on the clock at the end of the 4th quarter, the receiver does not make the catch in OT with Wiggins on him
How many do you want? You can’t pick and choose which matters more.

That play didn't have to take place.....

That was the series where Maffah had just gained 46 and was gassed. Shipley should have gone in fresh right there and ran it down their throat again....but that's not what we did. We tried Maffah on the very next play on a speed toss to the outside....gassed and didn't get near the corner.... for a 2 yard loss.
Then we're behind the sticks, needed to pass , and boom.... the game changer.

Mistakes are going to happen. Missed assignments, bad coaching calls, etc….
But what should never happen is a kicker missing a 29 yard field goal with a perfectly snapped and held ball.
I don’t blame Weitz for this. He was simply trying to get us out of a bad hole.
But i do blame the Clemson coaching staff for this. How does a premium program not have a reliable kicker from 29 yards? Its ridiculous and this is what cost us the game.

That’s oversimplifying a bit. I get that was a huge play and I wouldn’t argue it was the biggest play of the game, tied the game and was a 180 in momentum. But we lost, as most football teams do, because of a number of plays where we didn’t do what needed to be done, either because of flawed execution or, in some cases, ran plays that never should’ve been called. The nitpicking is because we had so many of them. A few come to mind immediately:
- Benson wheel route and subsequent punt flipped the entire field and our coaches went full “don’t lose” mode after that - 2nd & 11 pass play that saved an FSU timeout was a too cute garbage play to run in that game situation. - Missed 29 yard FG was also a huge play that still could’ve won the game in spite of the fumble TD - Could argue leaving Lukus single coverage on Coleman in OT was unnecessarily risky - In OT, the RPO 3&1 pass out to trips was so horribly inexcusable I don’t even know where to start. - Final 4&1 play was rushed and, I don’t know, why not at least try a run?
I’m sorry for the entire Clemson fan base but when you do as many things wrong as we did yesterday, it’s never just one play. I’m sure there were others along the way I’m forgetting.
Hopefully the coaches can keep working with the players to eliminate the soul crushing plays like the one OP mentioned. My concern is those plays tend to happen when you’re not consistently sharp, on the field and sideline.

I watched a lot of football this weekend. Someone tell Dabo in third and one and fourth and one fake handoff and go around side. I saw this many times.

Agreed. Unfortunate turnover there, but glad it wasn’t one relating to INTs or ball handling as a runner. Just a phenomenal delayed blitz that got to Cade when he was about to throw.
I fully believe we were going to score on that drive and be up 31-17 going into the 4th. Absolute killer. Still had a chance to win the game though and we couldn’t do it. Not having a reliable FG kicker might be the biggest issue over turnovers. We’ve left something like 15 points on the table that should be automatic without question. Multiple of those points coming in a needed moment (FG against Duke, PAT against Duke, PAT against FAU, and FG against FSU).
Seems like we’ve traded FG kicking for punting.
