What were the best pranks you pulled off (or saw) in the tin cans?

Dale and Henry lived on D6. Dale was not happy that Henry would leave the room unlocked when he took a shower. One night when Henry went to take a shower, Dale was inside but locked the door, but left the window open. Henry came back, found the door locked, so he went to the adjacent room. They suggested that he climb out on the ledge and go through the window. When Henry was on the ledge, Dale closed the window. Someone grabbed Henry’s towel and locked the other window.

This is my first post on Tigernet so here goes. Late during my first semester in '68 we had a couple inches of wet snow over a weekend. A huge snowball/iceball battle ensued on the Quad. Some guys had gone home for the weekend and had left their Johnstone awning windows open. A few guys noticed and before long hundreds of snowballs attacked the open windows. Needless to say when the Freshmen returned their rooms weren't exactly the same as they had left them.

Welcome aboard DI. We would love to hear some more tales from the late 60s from time to time.

this was around 92 or 93. Can’t remember if I was in f annex or the shoeboxes but it had snowed and between section d and the laundromat there must have been about 50 students on each side of the road. Any car that went by got pummeled. They finally sent a campus police car. He pulled up and everyone stopped. Someone got brave and threw a snowball at his car and he walked towards them…getting about 10 yards away from it. He left his driver side door open BIG MISTAKE. You know what happened next.

I was told that these pranks happened on E200 hall in 1965-66 to “bad rats.”
Someone would fill a trash can with water, lean it up against the closed door of a “bad rat” and knock on his door. You know the rest.
For really “bad rats” someone would squirt lighter fluid under his door and light it. The flames would quickly extinguish themselves. It was considered fun back then.

This happened on C-8 at Christmas break of 1972. One guy got the Greenville news every day and saved the copies. The guy next door was pretty straight laced but okay. When the guy nest door went home for Christmas, they made sure his window was cracked open. They then wadded up the individual sheets of newspaper and filled his room up from the door to the window and closed the window. When the guy returned it took him a while to get the door open and filled the hall trash cans on four floors.

Add a couple of pennies to the door frame and then slam the door. It became so tight, you could not open the door.

Once I emptied the fire extinguisher from the kitchen up and down the entire length of D5, it looked like fresh snow, then I left tracks leading to the RA's room.

students would sneak into adjacent stalls and flush at the same time. That caused the water to rise quickly in the "occupied" toilet, resulting in wet asssses and loud cursing.
Hall students occasionally filled trash barrels with water and detergent suds, emptied the container onto the hall floor, then had sliding runs. Close calls on several guys coming too close to the large, glass windows.
One other that I thought was hilarious was a student crawling onto a ledge, then up to a nearby open window. He'd then make loud howling or screeching noises, usually scaring the he1l out of the room occupants.
Oddly enough, I was probably one of the few who actually liked living in the tin cans...even in the days before they were air-conditioned. Met a lot of great people living like that.

You could see one of those yellow emergency call boxes by Dillard from our room in E6. If you recall the boxes didn’t have a receiver, but instead just a speaker you could turn up. We would run down to the box, call our room and then yell all sorts of comments to unsuspecting passers by. It seemed to never get old and because you could react to their reaction without them seeing you made it even better.

D5 in '67: Volunteer Fire Department runs required 2 people
(D5 was mostly occupied by rats w some sophs.)
The first rat wd squirt lighter fluid under a door. The second student would yell: "Fire! Volunteer Fire Department," and hold the dust pan on the floor and pointed to discharge into the crack under the door. Then the other rat would pour a full metal trashcan (3 or 4 gallons) of water onto the dust pan and into the room. The water pushed the lighter fluid further into the room, partially still on fire, while the water and lighter fluid made a big mess.
'67 D5 Milkshake cups for alarm clocks, for middle-of-the-night occasions: Since rhe radiators would overheat all of the rooms, everybody learned to regulate the room temperatures by keeping the windows cracked-open; more open as it got warmer outside, but always open. When payback time came, a rat wd fill two 24-oz milkshake cups w water, walk the ledge to the payee's room, open the window, climb into the room, and place the milkshake cups on the bed of the sleeping rat -- adjacent to the sleeper's legs. Then exit and wait for the screams and cursing. (These missions usually occurred during an all-nighter studying session.) When the cursing stopped the rat that set the alarm clocks had to sit in the dark and chuckle quietly, until the newly-awakened gave-up walking the hall and went back to his wet bed.
Construction bolts: in 1967-68, Littlejohn Arena was constructed. Some of the roof I-beams were around (est.) 10-12 feet tall. (The beams were too wide to lay down on a flatbed trailer and rode vertically. In March, on a VERY windy day one trailer carrying a (vertical) beam was blown over by the wind.) The I-beams were bolted together, using bolts about 3 inches in diameter by roughly 12-15 inches long, with nuts that were 2 to 3 inches thick. The bolt and nut weighed (my guess) 30-40 pounds. One of the D5 sophs borrowed a bolt and nut. At the end of the hall, near the laundry corner, the stairs went down to D2, with a swing-out window on each floor's landing. The soph fully-opened a window on each floor late one night and dropped the bolt and nut thru the 4 open windows. The noise was astounding and there was a new and permanent crack in the concrete walkway below.
Saturday parades to the games: A favorite Saturday morning activity was to place stereo speakers on the ledges and play gross music at full volumes. The Fugs was a favorite group of the New Yorkers/ Jerseys on the hall. Another favorite song, repeated often was "Why Don't We Do It in the Road." (Beatles?)
We also did the toilet flooding tricks previously noted. And played broom hockey in the halls.

My sophomore year a guy left early for Christmas. We jimmied his window and filled the room top to bottom with Tiger newspapers.
We had a guy who would always be the first on the hall to get up. We moved clock so that it’s as really 4:00 instead of 7:00. Best thing is we got him the very next day.
This was 83-84 I think. We had we at was called the fit. Sometime during exams someone would start beating the walls and that singled everyone to start throwing things out of windows. Punch cards. Jars of jelly. Water balloons. You name it. Saw a guy try to throw a chair. I saw a girl aiming back from laundry get got in the courtyard between Harcomb and E and hear the banging. She tried to run but that did not work. She was pummeled.
Lastly a big food fight at Harcomb. It was actually advertised and we came in with raincoats umbrellas and goggles. The frat tables got the worst. I hit hit with a glass and cut my leg. I remember two of my friends jumped under a table and told me there is no more room. They would miss me. I knew the risks.

He couldn't hardly open the door to get in. He kicked them all down the hall, out the door, and off the pad into the dumpster. Then someone else on the hall set it on fire. Amazing flames coming out of that dumpster!

Fall 1979, my freshman year, a guy was driving up and down the streets around Johnstone in a convertible yelling Go ##### ! Over and over, he was alonecand loud. He eventually parked his car across from the laundromat. Minutes later I heard someone yeahing..." my car is on fire, my f#$king car is on fire". Looked like someone put hay or a pale of hay in the front seat and lit it. Anyone else remember this happening ?
