What muff rate is considered above average/good?
Nov 7, 2014, 8:29 AM

1 muff every 20 punts fielded? I don't know, I'm just guessing.
Adam fielded 20 punts last year and 25 so far this year. I can think of 3 muffs, for a rate of 1 every 15. Maybe 1/15 is good?

I was at the game last night and was directly in front of Humphries and I can tell you that I don't know what he was thinking. He made the fair catch signal and the ball was still traveling. He was not going to make the catch. You are taught to move out of the way of the ball because it is better to let Wake down the ball inside the 5 than give them a touchdown.
As for the hit from Smith, it was a text book example of how to separate the ball from the receiver LEGALLY. I don't know if the ACC has an appeal process but if so, we need Smith against Chop Block U in just over a week.
My big problem is the same ref called all the PI calls on Clemson even when the ball was thrown out of bounds and was uncatchable. If it was just a guy that calls a tight game and doesn't let them play then their should have been PI's on Wake also. We outnumbered their fans at least 3 to 1 and everyone was changing ######## and yelling at even some flipping off the official. It literally turned out where after every Wake incompletion, every defensive back looked back for that ref to see if he was going to throw another flag.
It seemed like the other officials were fine. It was one guy. It makes you wonder if ESPN had him on the payroll trying to keep the game close.
We dominated the game everywhere but on the scoreboard. I know Stoudt had a statistically good game and 3 TDs but he wasn't even looking at wide open receivers running down the field. Stoudt has no peripheral vision and it always way late throwing deep balls. I know the back should have gotten the pitch that was fumbled but it was still a bad pass by Stoudt. He also continued to show that he cannot throw that QB rollout to the right and dumb the ball of to the RB. He throws it too hard and low just like when at FSU. He has done it all season though.
We are just a completely different team with Waton in. I really do hate that Dabo did not put Watson in for a couple of series in the first half. I think it would have helped to get him ready for GA Tech. His finger is stronger than it was and he threw the ball during warm ups. Yes he could have been hurt if he played but tht goes for every other player on the team. I also feel like Watson would have gotten us another score in the first half.
Wake finished with just over 100 yard total offense and at one point has 136 yards total offense and had 1 yard rushing to their final couple of plays in the game where they ran a couple of plays to get up to a whopping 7 yards of rushing for the game. We were number 2 in total defense coming into the game and likely wil be number 1 after this weekend.

You are correct in saying he should have let it go, but I will say the wind definitely took that ball an extra 3 yards further than he thought.

Considering the wind last night he probably shouldn't have tried to field the ball. You are not supposed to try when it's over your head. However, he has done an outstanding job this year with punts and doing whatever the staff ask of him.......the quiet hero.

about last nights officiating known to the league office........and, IMO, its criticism well-deserved. But as with all things in this conference, it'll fall on deaf ears.
HOWEVER!! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND the hesitance, reluctance, and outright fear of ACC media and the presidents and AD's of all ACC members (with one exception) to start insisting on Swofford's resignation!!! When are the ironically opinionated, yet spineless, columnists, radio and tv talking heads, bloggers, etc, going to start calling for his ouster???
Roy Williams, Dean Smith's, Bill Guthridge's, Larry Fedora's, Anson Dorrance's, Sylvia Hatchell's, Mike Fox's, and John Swofford's epitaph's should all read:
"If I tell God enough times that I really didn't know, maybe HE'LL believe me"

I don't get it either. Public perception outside of NC, cannot be favorable

I heard the head of officiating was on the broadcast questioning some of the calls, especially the targeting call, any truth to that?

What is the penalty with Targeting Robert Smith with your ineptness as an official and use of bias of the rules against him?
