What Scenarios Change Your Routine?

What Scenarios Change Your Routine?
I had planned a blog today on Clemson's chances in the ACC tournament, the chances of getting into the NCAA tournament and the long-term future of the baseball program. All of that changed around 6:35 this morning.

On my radio show this morning, our first call of the week came from Bill in Greenwood. Bill calls occasionally and I recognized his voice when he mentioned he was a Georgia Bulldog fan. For the next few minutes Bill cried about Georgia's schedule and how difficult it was.

The Dawgs do play one of the nation's toughest schedules this season with road games at South Carolina, Arizona State, LSU and Auburn. They have home games with Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia Tech and a game at Jacksonville against Florida. If Georgia wins the SEC East they will play in the Georgia Dome against the West champs in the SEC title game as well.

Bill says that Georgia can't win the national title with that schedule even though they are as talented as any team in the country. I agreed with Bill on almost every point he made until he went overboard with the SEC party line. Bill claimed that if any SEC team has two losses they still deserve to play in the BCS title game even if teams from the ACC or Big Ten were undefeated. He says that if Ohio State played in the SEC they would be a .500 team. He said if Clemson played Georgia's schedule they would lose five or six games.

Some don't understand the band of brothers that makes up the SEC but I figured out their situation many years ago.

SEC fans really don't like each other. They want you to believe they pull for each other but this is not the case. This is only an insurance policy.

I have been in SEC stadiums or tailgaiting outside of SEC stadiums and the PA announcer gives the score of an upset of an SEC team by an out of conference opponent. They place usually goes bonkers. I was not at an SEC stadium last November when Louisiana-Monroe upset Alabama but I would imagine most of the SEC fans were ecstatic. I imagine there were some laughs and some high fives. Someone probably made a crack about Bear Bryant being dead. But when Alabama beat Colorado in their bowl game battle and improved to 7-6 for the season I know many of those same fans claimed, 'SEC...SEC...SEC!' How can this be?

When California beat Tennessee last September I think Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee fans were ridiculing the Vols defense after giving up 45 points. They called Phil Fulmer 'Fat Phil' and had fun at the Vols' expense. But when Tennessee won their bowl game last year, again the 'SEC...SEC...SEC!' stuff started. How does this thing work?

You see, this is only an insurance policy. You get it both ways. You get to claim victory either way. When your conference rivals get upset like Auburn did against South Florida last season then you get to party at the expense of the Tigers. When they win the bowl game like Auburn did last year then you get to claim conference supremacy. This is insurance for fans. It is actually a great policy.

You see when you pull for a team then you really pull for a team. When your team loses then you cry. Your stomach doesn't feel right. It takes days or sometimes weeks to feel right again. You can't sleep. So all SEC fans have to pull for all SEC teams right? So when Florida State beat Alabama last year then the fans of Auburn, Tennessee, LSU and South Carolina should have been devastated right? Actually USC fans needed the loss because the Gamecocks and Bama finished 6-6 and were fighting it out for a bowl game. But USC fans could not break the SEC code of conduct and they had to pull for Bama. When Missouri went 2-0 against SEC teams last year all SEC fans should have not been able to sleep right? It is the code of conduct.

We don't have this code in the ACC. We simply do not do this in the ACC. Here are the rules for Clemson fans:
1. We don't like North Carolina. We don't like their colors. We don't like their fight song. We don't pull for UNC.
2. We don't like Florida State. We don't like their colors. We don't like their fight song. We don't pull for FSU.
3. We don't like Miami....you get the picture.
We never pull for these conference rivals because that is what they are...rivals. Manchester United doesn't pull for Chelsea. The Red Sox don't pull for the Yankees. Cats and dogs don't get along.

We don't need a stinking insurance policy.

Now there are a few scenarios that cause us to break out routine. They are:
1. As a Clemson fan, it is OK to pull for an ACC team if they play someone that is higher on the rival poll. For example, if South Carolina plays an ACC school it is expected that you break the conference routine and pull for the ACC school.
2. As a Clemson fan, it is OK to pull for an ACC team if Clemson directly benefits. The key here is directly. The strength of schedule argument in college football does not work because only number two and number three are affected by the strength of schedule argument. The acceptable deal here is if Clemson can move up in the polls because of an ACC rival winning then we can pull for the normal enemy. If the Tigers are ranked 10th and an ACC team is playing a team ranked ahead of Clemson then it is OK to pull for the ACC squad.
3. In some rare cases it is OK to have a team that you can't stand and it would be OK to pull for an ACC team if they played them. Again only on rare occasions. For example, I know some who really don't like Notre Dame. We can have a Notre Dame exception.

Do you think Clemson would have had a chance to sign a top ten class if Miami and FSU were on their normal games? You have a better chance to win the Yard of the Month if your neighbors' have crabgrass.

Remember the ACC is the enemy. If you see an ACC fan pulling for another ACC team then it should make us throw up in our mouths. Did I leave out any scenarios or did the three listed above cover all of our exceptions or is our code intact?

I agree with all these but the pull for FSU...as you can tell in my title I do like FSU but I am a die hard Clemson fan. I had to go to FSU because Clemson didnt offer my major. I love FSU but when they play the tigers I still pull for Clemson. Born and raised here can't get it out of my blood

Huh? ACC teams most certainly do the same flip-flops that SEC teams do....only the ACC does it in basketball. Coaches and fans alike complain and make their cases when only 4-5 ACC teams get into the NCAAs when other less historic conferences get more.

The ACC and SEC cases are very similar in regard to their "historical" sports - SEC football and ACC basketball. "The conference is tougher top to bottom" and "Our teams beat each other up during the season" is a common arguement for both SEC Football and ACC Basketball.

Amen brother! I get sick when I here all the of the "Vandy is a solid squad" & "I hope the dawgs kill the Jackets" from my chicken friends.

I completely disagree...the CU fans I know are just like the SEC fans you describe, myself included. I know I always pull for the conference in bowl games...no matter how much I otherwise may despise the particular ACC team. Yes, there are times when I find it humerous that NC, NC State, Ga Tech, or some other foe falls on its face against a-sisters of the poor-school, but come the national spotlight, and especially when being compared with how other conferences are doing in the bowls, I always want the ACC to fair well.

I totally agree that the SEC fans are, by and large, a bunch of blow-hards about their conference, but I also have no doubt ACC fans would be bragging about the ACC just as much if it were stacked with the same level of talent year in and year out.

I totally agree with everything you said. There is only 1 team in the ACC that I pull for (minus exceptions), and it is Clemson.

I am with SaltyTiger...I disagree. I hope every team we face in a given year is undefeaded until they play us, including the chickens. If an ACC team is playing an out of conference opponent, I pull for the ACC tem everytime. As much as it pains me to admit it, the SEC is the best football conference, the only chance to change that fact is to have ACC teams beat SEC (and other conference) foes. Our conference bowl records have GOT to improve before we get respect. People who talk about the PAC-10 being better than the ACC drive me crazy, but bowl and out of conference records are hard to agrue with.

Mickey, you left out one truth here. It is NEVER okay to pull for S. Carolina in any situation, no matter who they are playing, no matter the scenario. If the coots are playing the Taliban, give me a turban....

Hooah!

I have pulled for Clemson since 1953. I do not like the ACC. I wish Clemson was not in the ACC. Please Clemson, get out of the ACC.

Yep, lets go back to the Southern Conference!!!!

Southern Conference might not be a bad idea. App State would beat half of the ACC on a regular basis. Of course, you probably like Swofford, Wirtz, Coach Krushef, Cherry, time descrepancies and dleayed ballgames at Duke, 40/7 foul descrepanices and NC, and the list goes on. Not me, I've had a gut full of their arrogance.

Posted by OldManTiger on May 19, 2008 at 02:10 PM EDT #

No, I don't like any of that stuff, but each and every conference has their perceived biases. Changing conferences won't do anything to alleviate any real or just perceived biases. You think the SEC power structure would bow to CLemson....I don't. After all, when the SEC was talking to FSU, which started the whole expansion ripple, they decided to not come after Clemson as the school to pair with FSU - it was GT.

Therefore, I don't see how or why our fans seem to think the SEC would treat Clemson any better.

I agree with Salty and PokerTiger. I know it makes me a little embarrassed that we can't win the ACC (or even our half of it) and then watch us do so poorly in bowl games.

I too think it'd be great if everyone was undefeated until they got to us... EXCEPT USC. If they never won another game in the history of the world in any sport, I'd be one happy man.

Sorry, but I pull for Clemson first and foremost, but I pull for the ACC when playing out of conference. It's called "sportmanship" ;-)

That said, I've become a closet Wake Forest football fan. I love my Tigers, but it's fun to watch Wake do more with less than many other schools with their misdirection offense...

very good blog Mickey. Well done. And no way a 2 loss SEC team deserves to go ahead of a 1 loss ACC or big 12 team let alone a undefeated one.

I think it's foolish to hate another team more than you love your own team. I pull for all ACC teams against OOC opponents because when ACC teams win, it helps bring respect to the ACC and consequently it helps bring a higher national ranking (and better recruits) to Clemson. I also pull for all teams on Clemson's schedule (even SoCar) because I want every Clemson opponent to be undefeated (and ranked #1) when Clemson beats them.

If Clemson goes through the ACC undefeated (or worse, with one loss) this season, Clemson may not get a shot at the national title unless Alabama & SoCar do well, and unless there are a couple of nationally ranked ACC teams (who have done well against their OOC opponents).

Then again, since rooting for a team (unless you're in-person) won't affect whether or not they win, you might as well do whatever makes you happy.

I agree with ya Razz {for probably the first time} except for the USuCk part.
There is NO reason good enough to EVER get behind that bunch.

Ok, so you want the teams in our conference to be as weak as possible so it will be easier for us to run the table? Is this the same person who wants us to play UGA and other big name out-of-conference opponents? Speak for yourself, but I want to be in a conference with other national powers so we can have more big games in The Valley. I of course want to win those games, but you don't get better by playing weak competition. That is why Ohio State has lost the National Championship game the last two years.

The coots and other sec teams are afflicted with a rather severe disease most commonly refered to as:

e-nam-or-e-di-a (enamoredia) - inflamed with love.

No RX and no cure.

The only time I pull for a South Enamored Conference team is when it plays the coots.

Could it be that Clemson, FSU, and Miami all sign a top ten class this coming year? It appears to be in the works.
