Many Stars....One Football / Ryan Update
Ryan Update 8-14
After 74 days in the hospital, Ryan came home today.
He is in a great mood and was extremely excited to finally be out of the hospital. He said the food was the worst part of staying that long in a hospital so we had cheeseburgers, corn on the cob and macaroni and cheese for lunch.
He is coming to Clemson tomorrow and we are excited about the weekend. We would love to have you come by for his birthday drop-in Saturday at Valley Walk behind the Esso Club Saturday anytime between 4-7 PM.
Thanks again for your prayers.
Many Stars…One Football
Rob Spence has a wonderful problem this season. He has major weapons at his disposal. He has record setters at quarterback, running back and wide receivers. But he will have to play the game with only one football and he has a lot of superstars to keep happy.
Part of the solution is the players and their attitudes. I have little doubt that they will act unselfishly and will be team players. It always helps to win, though. It makes it harder to become a squeaky wheel if losing sets in.
The thing that most of the players realize is the more balanced the offense, the more opportunities they will have for big plays because they defense cannot key on any one player.
So, who will have big years in this year’s offense?
James Davis
I truly believe Davis came back for his senior season for a reason and I expect a monster season from the Atlanta native. Davis has a great chance to become the school’s all-time leading rusher and could have a chance to break the ACC record with a huge year.
To me it all comes down to opportunities. Davis had 165 carries as a freshman, 203 as a sophomore and 214 last season. If he is giving a chance to carry it 225-250 times then he could have that monster season. Spiller and the balance of the passing game will take away some carries but I think Davis will be the focal point of the offense.
His best season was his sophomore campaign where he rushed for 1187 yards and 17 touchdowns. I think he can have a 1200 yard season but I am not sure he will repeat the touchdown total.
My guess is Davis goes for 1250 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in 2008.
C.J. Spiller
A sophomore slump set Spiller back a year ago. After bursting upon the scene with 938 yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman, Spiller had only 768 yards and three rushing touchdowns a year ago.
Reports have Spiller getting very dedicated in the off-season and I expect a break out year here. I think you will see a stronger and more physical running back this season. He still will be a major part of the offense in the passing game and the return game. In two years he has 19 touchdowns including the rushing, receiving and returns but I think he can get close to that two year total in one season.
My guess is Spiller rushes for 800 yards and 10 touchdowns, has 350 receiving yards and about three touchdowns and a couple of returns for touchdowns.
Jamie Harper
Reports coming out of camp have Harper making a tremendous impression on the staff. He has excelled in all aspects of the game including pass protection which is usually the most difficult for freshmen backs.
I think Harper can have a very good freshman season but I am not sure he will have a ton of opportunities just quite yet. Unless Davis or Spiller get nicked up, I think Harper will se mostly mop up duty. However, he will give us a glimpse of the future.
My guess is Harper gets about 400 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in limited action.
Cullen Harper
Who could have imagined Cullen Harper would have broken 22 records in his first year as a starter? His surprising season have him poised to have a great senior season. Many consider Harper one of the top senior quarterbacks in the country. In fact, he is the ACC pre-season MVP from the ACC media days.
I can Harper being very efficient again this season and 65% completion percentage is not out of the question. I do think it is slightly unreasonable to expect another season with close to 3,000 yards passing and 27 touchdowns with only six picks.
My best guess is that Harper throws for about 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Aaron Kelly
Aaron Kelly will break the all-time receiving record in his first game and records could continue to fall all season. I think he has worked very hard once again this year and Kelly has a chance to impress NFL scouts.
Kelly is in the best shape of his life and is as good as ever. However, I think it would be terribly difficult to have another 88 catch, 1100-yard 11 touchdown season.
My best guess is Kelly will grab 70 receptions for 900 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Tyler Grisham
Few could have expected Grisham to increase his catches from 25 as a sophomore to 60 as a junior. I think it would be extremely difficult for Grisham to repeat that kind of season. However, his value will continue to increase because he excels at so many aspects of the game.
My guess is Grisham has 50 receptions for 400 yards and six touchdowns.
Jacoby Ford
Here is my big breakout guy this season. As a freshman he had 15 receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Last season he was injured and had 17 catches for 310 yards and four touchdowns. Ford will become a major part of the scheme as a junior. I can see his speed becoming a huge factor.
My guess is Ford goes for 50 catches for 700 yards and 8 touchdowns.

How many yards will Ford get on the ground? You know they are going to run the reverse, and you know he will break a few long runs. Also, no mention of Ellington?
Glad to hear Ryan was finally able to come home.

Mickey,
I saw that Fenway can't host the 2009 ACC Baseball championship and that the ACC will need to find another venue. How do we go about pushing for Greenville to host?

No matter who Spence gives the ball to, Kelly, Grisham, Davis and Cullen Harper will all leave (and Spiller plans to leave) after this season, so all of them will be busting their butts to prove themselves to the NFL scouts. (I'd love to see CJ stay for his senior year with Harper in tandem, but I just don't see that happening.) So Spence should feel free to spread the ball around as needed to win (and to prepare the younger guys for next season), without regard for anybody's ego.
I wonder if Spence will prepare for next season to the maximum extent possible by playing some of the younger guys (like Korn, Jamie Harper, & Dye) as much as he can in mop up duty, or if he'll keep Cullen Harper, Kelly, & Davis on the field (more than absolutely necessary) in order to help the seniors set records, win national awards, and make their cases for the NFL.

I just hope Davis doesn't get hurt, more for his sake than the team. He's had an injury every year that cost him playing time. He'd probably have another 500 yards rushing if it were not for the injuries, and pro scouts notice if a guy appears to be injury prone. Sure, the hand his freshman year was a fluke thing, but he needs to play with power and not re-injure that shoulder. Otherwise, it could make scouts a bit leery of JD. Hurting the same shoulder 3 seasons in a row would be bad news for JD's NFL aspirations. Barring injury, and enough carries, he could easily finish as the ACC's all time leading rusher. Good luck, James!

Taking your offensive expectations of key players involved and factoring a 14 game possibility plus a 15% contribution by rest of the offensive cadre and special teams available: The offense should average 380 yds per game with about a 28 point output.

Hey Razz.... I'm guessing Spence may know more about who to keep on the field and why to keep them than you, me or anyone else on this board. Not sure, but just a guess... And one thing I know, there's no coach in the world stupid enough to keep players on the field for any reason other than they believe they are the right players to win the game. No coach would sacrifice a game to help a player impress the NFL. Sometimes I wonder if you're ACTUALLY a 12 year old, or just think like one.

RU4GOD2: I responded to Mickey’s point that Spence "will have to play the game with only one football and he has a lot of superstars to keep happy." Last year, Davis threatened to bolt to the NFL if Spence didn't give him more carries, and Spence publicly caved. So your assertion is wrong.
When a game is well in hand, coaches commonly let seniors play longer than needed, so they can set records, and showcase their NFL credentials. They'll often pull the senior in a year-end game as soon as they set the record. I've seen it many times over the years. Letting guys set records and sending them to the NFL helps recruiting. Yet you don't want to risk injuries to your stars, and you want to get your younger guys experience. It's not as black & white as playing "the right players to win the game".
It's ironic that you hurl a childish insult accusing ME of thinking like a 12 year old. It's also ironic that such unchristian behavior comes from someone calling themselves "RU4GOD2".

RU4GOD2,
I take issue with Razz often times myself, but I think you may have jumped the gun on him here. I see nothing in his post that suggests that he's trying to put Spence down. He simply asks a question. I haven't read a large number of posts from you, so my hope is that this is not typical, particularly the name-calling part. If it is, I, for one, would appreciate you changing your screen name to something more representitve.

razz, precisely the point i made 2 days ago about many of the self-professed christians on TNET. and they've been on here for days drooling over scantly clad girls and gymnasts. so if self-professed christians are blind to being that openly hypocritical, then it's truly hopeless to think they can be engaged in intelligent conversation about clemson football if it doesn't fit their orange-tinted view point.

are WR are going to have over 22 TDS and our QB is only going to throw 20?
Posted by rbrugger on August 15, 2008 at 10:03 AM EDT #
Maybe Korn throws a few?... or even James Davis?...
Posted by Razzmatazz on August 15, 2008 at 11:54 AM EDT #
Good eye, rugger. I didn't even catch that. If Korn is throwing TD passes, it will be to guys like Dye, Clear and Jones, not Kelly, Grisham and Ford.

Sorry Mickey, but your estimates are inflated, the new timing rules this year will shorten games and cut back the number of plays each team gets to run.

Razzz.... sorry for the name calling.. but you post on nearly every site that covers the tigers and all I see is you putting down and questioning Spence, Tommy and the team. I'm just saying that you always seem to criticize the experts. And it's getting old. It's getting to the point that when I see your name on a post, I pass over it, because I know what the tone will be. Why not say things that lift up these guys? Why not criticize specific instances as they happen. Why continually make blanket statements about the possibilities of the future, or the inadequacies of the coaches based on the past. All we can change is the future. Give them a chance. Lets be fair to everyone. Even those with whom we disagree. You just seem like a very negative person. That's all I'm saying.
And again, sorry for the "12 yr old" comment. Not nice and I apologize.

RU4GOD2,
Um, I think you have it backwards! Razz & I and others are NOT questioning the experts! We agree with them. every article and analysis you read about CU says the same things ..... "underachievers, can't get over the hump, Spence can't score on physical teams, TB hasn't proven squat yet, waiting on the inevitable collapse, yadda yadda yadda" .... razz & i & others see TB & CU for what and where they are, the same as the media & experts and most every fan & alum i talk to off of TNet. It's you & the loud orange-tinted evangelical minority on TNET that aren't seeing the reality!!

RU: No problem. We all get a bit carried away sometimes because we love our Tigers so much. You're a stand-up person for taking the time to reply.

FlatTiger, et al: Just to clarify, I wasn't criticizing Spence in my comments above. I was just trying to raise (what I thought were) some interesting points.
I’ve been critical of Spence at times in the past. But I think he's gotten wiser and improved each year. (Most smart people do.) So at this point in the season, I'm nervously optimistic. If the O-line performs well, Spence will have lots of options. If not, he'll have to be more creative. Either way, I hope he proves to be the best OC in the nation.
I just call them like I see them… and it's easy for me to do from the comfort of my chair with a beer in my hand. For example, I thought Spence did a bad job in our loss to BC, but he did a good job in our loss to Auburn. And I posted my worthless opinions on each at the time. Spence and every other college football coach know a lot more about football than me. Yet I opine.
Go Tigers!
