Mickey,
First just wanted to say that I enjoy listening to your show (when I get to hear it) and read your blog daily. I was wondering if any of the upcoming practices will be open to the public. I currently live in Louisville KY and will be in the upstate next week to visit family and friends. I have a four year which is head over hills for Clemson football. I am not sure if my school schedule will allow us to make it back to town this fall for an actual game so I thought I might take him to a practice if they were open to the public.
Thanks
Aaron
Aaron,
I just got the notice of the first practice time from the SID office last night and the first practice is Tuesday at 5:45 PM but it is closed to the public. The release said they did not know other dates yet. I am not sure if any practices will be open but Tigernet will have that information when it becomes available.
Mickey,
I keep reading about how good WR Hakeem Flowers of Wade Hampton is (41 national offers) and that neither Clemson nor USC is recruiting him.
With your insight, can you say why Clemson and USC are not recruiting him?
Thanks,
Red
Red,
Both in-state schools have evaluated Flowers on several occasions and I doubt either would offer. I have seen him play several times and think the in-state schools have a better read on him than the out-of-state powers. He is a big kid that runs well but I think he is not as good some of the national recruiting sites have rated him.
Mickey,
You said "The argument of the weak opponent is a weak one in my opinion. I will not be in Death Valley on September 4th to watch North Texas. I am going to watch Clemson." Seriously? Do you really think that way?
I am an alum that has recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. I will miss my Tigers dearly, having been able to attend home games in person for a dozen years. Of those years, I went about 6 without missing a home game. But you know what, I got sick of playing PC, Wofford, The Citadel, SC State, etc.. What does that show us about our Tigers? To me those games are lose-lose. If we win- well, we should have and it was never by enough points. If we lose, and we have come close on occasion (I remember a UTEP game that had the stadium silent at halftime), then we REALLY look bad.
In my opinion you only get better by playing better teams. How do the previously mention teams make us better? We play a more talented team during practice. That "game" draws 20-40,000 depending on expectations for the season.
What made "Florida State" was playing anyone, anywhere. An attitude reflected in other up-and-coming programs like Boise State or Fresno State. I would rather Clemson play Oklahoma, Texas, the real USC, Notre Dame, or any "name" team and lose than a cream puff & win.
Being so far away from Clemson, with little possibility of going to a home game, I have a heightened awareness of how special those games are. Let's face it, though, would you rather go to Clemson vs. Wofford or Clemson vs. LSU?
In my opinion, the ONLY cream puff on the schedule could be game 1. If you open on the road at a "name" team, then you have opted out of cream puffs for the year. Open at home against a cream puff or lay off of them. :)
The closest school to me out here is Stanford. Clemson could learn a lot from Stanford- a private school with a GREAT academic reputation AND GREAT athletic teams. This year they open with a cream puff, then launch into a respectable schedule. Will they do well? Not likely, but at least I can go watch them play an ACC team when Wake comes on September 18th. Too bad it is not Clemson that is making the trip.
Anyway, I used to enjoy your show on the way to work (now I am sleeping when it is on) and I appreciate your blog on Tigernet. Tigernet is the only way to keep the pulse on the Tigers from 3000 miles away. Oh, and next time you see President Barker, ask him when his public speech will be when he revisits his 10 year goals from last decade (I was there for that one). I see we have made great strides on academics, but I have yet to see the multiple final fours and a championship in football. The "Olympic" sports have had a few shining moments, but nothing compared to the goal he set. I did email him about this and did not receive a reply. I like Barker, but he has neglected his athletic goals to achieve the academic ones. I think Clemson CAN do both.
Sorry for the novel, but I have pent up Clemson talk in me! :) Have a great day!

C.J.,
Thanks for the e-mail. Hope all is well on the West Coast. I agree with your assessment of schedules and would love to see great opponents every week but unfortunately that is not how college football works for most of the country.
The Pac-10 is different because they play nine conference games now. The Big 10 schools also play good out of conference schedules for the most part. Also, Clemson does play two SEC schools this year and at least two SEC schools in each of the next seven or eight years. But here are opponents from other schools this year:
Alabama plays San Jose State and Georgia State
Auburn plays Arkansas State and Chattanooga
Arkansas plays Tennessee Tech and Louisiana Monroe
LSU plays McNeese State and Lousiana Monroe
Ole Miss plays Jacksonville State and Louisiana Lafayette
Miss State plays Alcorn State and UAB
Florida plays Appalachian State and Miami, OH
Georgia plays Louisiana Lafayette and Idaho State
South Carolina plays Furman and Troy
Tennessee plays UT-Martin and UAB
Kentucky plays Western Kentucky and Akron and Charleston Southern
Virginia Tech plays James Madison and Central Michigan
Georgia Tech plays South Carolina State and Middle Tennessee State
Virginia plays Richmond and VMI and Eastern Michigan
Boston College plays Weber State and Kent State
Maryland plays Morgan State and Florida International
As far as the president is concerned, I think it is fair for people to ask about the failures of the athletic department. However, if I ask then I am only perceived as an obstructionist. They don’t take my questions serious and chalk it up to me being me. However, you bring up real questions. Re-send your e-mail to his office and see if you get a response.
Mickey,
Reading your blog about attendance being down at Clemson surprised me that parking was not mentioned. That is the single biggest reason a lot of fans do not come to Clemson games anymore. I hear this all the time. When Clemson decided to make all accessible parking IPTAY it was a big mistake. You now see huge areas of parking with no cars there {old soccer field}.Fans hate parking at Y beach. The only way to change things like this is bring this problem out in the media. Will you help get this out to people in the athletic department so changes can be made?
THANKS
Glenn
Glenn,
I have had Billy D on the show in the past and he is aware of this. The IPTAY people tell me they get more complaints about parking than they do tickets. However, I just don’t understand the complaints. What else can they do? Construction continues to take parking away from IPTAY and they have to put people somewhere. They have no choices. I know this sounds harsh and this is coming from someone who has a kid that can’t walk well so I understand any handicap issues. But, I have a friend who is a professor on campus that sums it up best when talking about parking on campus everyday and for football games when he says, “We don’t have a parking problem, we have a lazy problem.” They play seven home games a year. I am physically able to walk so I walk. I go to away games and have to park a lot further from the stadium and walk there too. I have compassion for elderly or handicap people who have issues walking but none for able bodied people who complain about parking. I know this sounds harsh but I can walk to see Clemson play football.
Mickey,
I cannot seem to find stats for Steve Fuller for each season at CU. I can find his NFL stats, and career stats at CU, but not for each season ... 1976, 1977, 1978. You'd think that would be readily available, but I cannot seem to locate it anywhere. Can you point me in the right direction?
By the way, enjoy your blogs on TigerNet.
Thanks... Mike
