Hey Mickey,
With KP returning as QB and numbers getting tight with 16 commits, do you still see us going after another QB for 2011? Seems like we've lost on the big targets (Lemay, Golson, etc) and are now looking at fall-back recruits. Would we not be better off getting 1 or 2 QB's in 2012?
Mark
Mark,
The staff still wants another commitment at quarterback in this class. Parker most likely will not return for the 2011 and 2012 seasons and Michael Wade is a senior so they will have only one quarterback with any experience back in 2011. Tony McNeal was one of their top QBs on their board and he will be here in January but the staff still would like to have another quarterback for 2011. They still will sign a quarterback in the next class as well.
Dear Mickey,
Today I guess I am left hoping the Colorado Rockies are cheap SOBs! I am keeping my fingers crossed. I literally think the difference between having Parker return to Clemson versus having him leave is about 2 or 3 wins (9- 3 versus 7-5 or 6-6).
Kirk
Kirk,
I think Parker makes Clemson a much better football team but I am not sure how many wins that will translate to. I do like the fact that they have a starting quarterback coming back with four returning starters along the offensive line.
Mickey,
In light of the recent events at UNC and South Carolina, and the NCAA investigation involved, it's seems more and more apparent that the NCAA could dig deeper into virtually any FBS school and find something of interest. That being said, you have a pretty good grasp on the ins-and-outs of recruiting. Without naming names or telling individual stories (not that you would), how seedy is the world of major college football recruiting? Is it one of those things that is better to know less about, so to speak, in that the more you know the more disappointing it becomes? I've heard from former players that things used to be worse than they are now, as far as benefits, money, etc.; would you agree with this? Just curious as to how recruiting really works from someone who has a pretty good perspective.
Daniel
Daniel,
Thanks for the e-mail. Anytime there is competition someone is going to cut corners and cheat. The higher the stakes, the more cheating. But I do think most schools and coaches are committed to compliance with NCAA rules. I think the business is full of good people but there are always a few that will never comply. I also think that many “live in the grey.” I would say a much larger percentage of people push the limits without actually breaking rules. I also agree with the idea that it was much worse in the 1970s and 1980s.
Mickey,
First I really enjoy the Blog. I think you are right on with most of your points. My first question is, when does Danny Ford go into the Ring of Honor? He is well over due and more than deserving. It is time we step up and get Coach Ford in there.
Secondly, who do you think will be the next player into the Ring? I know Spiller is more than deserving, but he still has to have his NFL career play out I believe. I think Michael Dean Perry should be considered for induction now. Perry's numbers were unbelievable at Clemson and again in the NFL. I cannot think of a more deserving player over the last 30 years of Clemson football. Your thoughts?
Bill
Bill,
Coach Ford should have been in the ring of honor years ago. Most of the people who were against it are not involved anymore so I think it will happen. Putting his name under the 1981 National Championship team was meant to be a compromise but he needs his own day. He coached other teams besides that one team.
I am not sure who the next will be but I would take the safe route here. I think it needs to be a rare induction in order to keep it special. Brian Dawkins, Levon Kirkland, Rod Gardner, Woody Dantzler and C.J. Spiller come to mind but others are also deserving of the recognition. I agree that Michael Dean was a superstar and deserves to be in the ring of honor.
Mickey,
I love your blog and read every day. I haven’t heard much said of this, but how many times in Clemson history have we had at least 1 first round pick in each of the three major professional drafts? This year we had Spiller in the NFL draft, then Parker in the MLB draft, and Booker in the NBA draft. I was just wondering if this has happen before.
Thanks

Ken,
Thanks for the kind words. It happened once before in 1987, Horace Grant was the #10 pick of the NBA Draft, Bill Spiers was pick #13 of the MLB Draft, and Terrence Flagler was selection #25 in the NFL Draft.
Hi Mickey,
I enjoyed reading your blog today on Clemson’s breakout candidate. I agree Ellington has the opportunity to have a very good season but I think I would pick Dwayne Allen as the breakout candidate. I think we could see Ellington double his rushing yards from last year but I think we could see Allen put up his season yards (108) in one game. That may be a bit of a stretch but I think Allen has the ability to be our go-to receiver this year.
Thanks,
Harrison
Harrison,
I agree with your assessment of Allen. He is loaded with ability and there is a big opportunity for him because Palmer is gone and most of the wide outs are still question marks. Allen has had a great off-season and is poised to have a big year.
Mickey,
Why can't Clemson get players out of Rock Hill? It seems Cootville is leading for Clowney. What do we need to do to get in that area?
Also: we might as well give up - Bart Wright has us at 7-5 and SC at 9-3 with back to back victories over Clemson for the first time in decades. If that happens, God help us all - they never will shut up.
Rick
Rick,
South Carolina has done a good job in Rock Hill and they have people in those schools that are close to their program. Clemson is heavily involved for Clowney but I think Alabama is the leader. Bart Wright picked Clemson to win 11 games last year so I would not count on his expert analysis.
