Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
Say you did NOT Call our beloved Coach Spurrier, a Goober? Have you heard yourself lately? Have you looked in a mirror lately?

Coach Spurrier is among the best living College Football coaches of all time. I have never called you because I don't want to use the kind of language you make me use in the car alone on the air.

It’s your show, but you really show jealousy by saying such hateful things just because some idiot gave you a radio show.

I will never listen to you again, you about make me wreck screaming at your dumb butt..

GO COCKS!!

Unsigned,
No, I did not call Spurrier a goober. I said he looked like a goober on ESPN with his visor turned backwards.

Yes, I have heard myself lately and at times do sound like a goober.

Yes, I have looked in the mirror lately and have no problem admitting that sometimes I too look like a goober.

I did not say anything about Spurrier’s coaching. I agree with you that he is a terrific coach. In fact, I like Spurrier.

The only thing I guess we disagree on is that I am not jealous of Spurrier and I don’t think it is hateful to say he looked like a goober with his visor turned backwards. The statement said nothing about his intelligence, character or coaching ability. It was not a judgment on him in any way except for his fashion choice. He can’t win enough football games to avoid that statement that if he wore a visor backwards then he looks like a goober. Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno would look like a goober of they wore a visor backwards. If Dabo Swinney, Barrack Obama or my dad ever wore a visor backwards then I would say they looked like a goober too.

I guess we differ also in that I would not use bad language in the car because of something this trivial and light hearted. I probably would have made a judgment about my intelligence or the intelligence of the owners and programming director of our station based upon the limited information I had.

We do have one thing in common though. I am not sure grammar is our strong point.

Sorry you will longer listen to the show.

Mickey,
Enjoying the show. Do you know if any 2010 football signees did not qualify?

Thanks,
Jared

Jared,
Rickey Chaney did not make it and will go to a JUCO. He is the only signee that we know at this point that will not make it at this point. There are a couple of other guys who are still waiting to hear from the clearinghouse but most think they have completed the requirements. One player is still in summer school trying to get in but we will not know about his status until August. I just don’t think it is appropriate to name those guys and speculate until the final word is out.

Mickey,
A big concern I have about Kyle coming back for football is how he will handle a big pass rush. Will he take the hits as he did last year? Will he avoid contact to prevent possible injury? I am not sure. I would think he would have the dollar cost of an injury in the back of his mind. I don’t think we need our quarterback to be worried about how much money an injury will cost.

On the other hand, it didn’t seem to hold CJ back last year. Maybe I’m selling Kyle short.

Your thoughts?

Tony

Tony,
I think you make a valid point and this is something we may never know. If he does come back then the hope is that will not be the case. However, no one really knows how he will react. I would hope that Parker is a tough competitor that would not let those issues affect his play. I think you do bring up valid points.

Dear Mickey,

Do you have any thoughts on Kyle Parker's dismal performance in the College World Series and his future in MLB? One might argue it was simply one of those stretches in which a player does not hit well. On the other hand, one might say that a player that aspires to play in the MLB should be able to hit against college pitchers.

Kirk

Kirk,
I am not sure what happened to Parker at the College World Series and either scenario could be the case. I do think he may have been pressing too much though. Sometimes run producers try to do too much at the plate and that is easily understandable. I hope I am wrong but my opinion is that Parker is not as good of a hitter as he looked at times this season and not as bad of a hitter as he looked in Omaha. My guess is that he is somewhere in between those extremes.

Mickey,
First I want to say that it's great to hear about Ryan. I have really enjoyed getting to know him and watching his progress. Also, wanted to tell you how great it was at the CWS. You really need to go. It was a lot of fun. There were so many people from so many schools, even schools that weren't playing. Everyone just made you feel welcomed and people enjoyed discussing baseball and telling each other about their schools, traditions, and sports programs.

Here are my questions/concerns about in state baseball recruiting. I know everyone has to get a quarter of a scholarship and it is hard because players in NC, GA, VA pay in state tuition as opposed to out of state for Clemson (which is a lot). It that all everyone gets? Does everyone just get a quarter of a scholarship and that uses all the money or is there money left over after the quarter scholarships and some people get a third scholarship or a half scholarship depending on how good they are or how much we want them? If some people get more than a quarter and if you have a player from SC that also gets the lottery money (which could run from $5000 to $8000), then that player would have a lot of his schooling paid for and you could use your extra money for better out of state players. I know Roth from Riverside would fit in this category and probably Wingo would too. Also by taking just a few more in state guys, you have a better rapport with the in state coaches and players and have more SC players on the team. Then if a SC player comes along that is a super star, you would have a better chance of getting him. I know USC does not start a lot of SC players and they are not the stars of the team, but it just bothers me that Jack does so little to recruit our own state. We have zero players from SC in our next recruiting class. I have a friend that teaches at Riverside and she says that Roth was very interested in Clemson, but we just didn't pay him much attention.

Hope my questions make sense. Just trying to understand what seems like common sense to me.

Peggy

Peggy,
Thanks for the nice words about Ryan. Also, I hear the College World Series is an awesome trip and hope to go one day. On the subject of scholarship money, there is a minimum each baseball player on scholarship gets (its either 25% or 33%). Each school is limited to 11.7 scholarships so you have to be very careful in how you distribute the money because you need a little more than 30 players in your program. You can see how money would get tight. Also, if you have a great player then some schools might offer him a full scholarship and split the other 10.7 up among the other 30 or so players. Also, you are correct when you say there are other avenues available. Some kids qualify for different types of grants. Lastly, I do think South Carolina has an advantage in the state with their relationships with certain programs. I think you have to give South Carolina credit for doing a better job in our state.

Mickey,
Let me preface this entire email by saying it’s a bit piecemeal. Well, after a night to cool off, things are usually a bit clearer. It was clear that USC was the better team, both nights. It’s clear that they have deeper pitching and better hitting. It’s also clear that Clemson STILL can’t get over that "hump". It makes it even worse that we are now 0-4 to USC in the CWS. I can’t even say anything to the obnoxious fans that pepper the Charleston area. I understand that we have overachieved this year and I imagine that you will pound that on your blog Monday, but that doesn’t matter, that’s not a valid excuse. We were ONE win away from the CWS. Teams starting 2-0 are now 19/22 to advance to the CWS championship game. Clemson becomes part of a very small minority that has failed (and we have done it twice). It seems we are constantly in that minority. It seems we are always choking on something. Doesn’t it? The worst part about this is I have come to expect it. I graduated in 2006 and I quickly learned that Clemson cannot be trusted in the post season (or anytime really). I have never been to a post season football game. Why? Because and especially under TB they lose and they lose badly (save the Peach bowl vs Tenn.), hopefully Dabo will prove me wrong, but I didn’t travel down to Tampa this past season because I knew the outcome before it was even played. I can’t imagine the money time and effort people continue to burn on Clemson athletics and the return is so dismal (believe me it is an investment, regardless if some people say it’s only entertainment). What did I do last night? I went out with my friends (dinner and movie) to live my life and enjoy the evening (rather than slaving over the tv screaming and inducing health hazardous stress). I knew I wasn’t going to miss anything. Low and behold, I was right, again. You can almost set you watch by the disappointment Clemson brings in sports. Sadly I’m used to it by now... but unfortunately I’m not numb to it. I used to stress and bleed orange like crazy. Obsess about this or that with Clemson sports. I think it was about a year ago when the girl i was dating asked why I stressed about it so much. I couldn’t come up with a good answer. That’s when I decided to engage in better more fulfilling activities than Clemson sports. Don’t get me wrong I watch Clemson... I watch them A LOT. But if something in my life comes up (like movies, beach, boat, festivals) I don’t even hesitate. Because Clemson more often than not will let you down when it counts. Obviously I care about Clemson, otherwise i wouldn't be writing this. Its just pure and simple frustration at our ineptitude to come through when it really matters. That is killing our fan base, people are becoming apathetic and complacent with Clemson Athletics. Little by little these collapses erode the fan base. It tough to watch.

Tyler

Tyler,
I don’t disagree with a lot of what you said. The only major thing I disagree upon is your involvement. I don’t blame anyone for being frustrated. You have reached a point that many have but I have not yet. I still want to be engaged in the process if going and putting my heart and soul into it. My hope is that when we do win again, it will be more satisfying. At times it is tough to watch but to me it is tougher to not watch. Hope to get you back soon.
