Friday E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Dear Mickey,
I'm not sure how old you are, but I've deduced from your recollections of Clemson games...etc that we're approximately the same age (I'm 47). So, I'm guessing that you're familiar with the Red Parker years...etc. My memories of following Clemson range from our mediocrity (getting killed by South Carolina in '75) to beating SC (with QB Mike O'Cain) the following year (28-9 was the score???) (one of our two wins on the year, I believe)....to the thrilling come-from-behind win over SC, in Columbia (Jerry Butler's catch). Remember that Red Parker's last recruiting class or two ended up being legends for the program.

All those memories past to present come to mind as I reflect on yesterday's sweet signing day class by Clemson. I think about the dark period following Danny Ford's tenure, and I feel a sense of retribution for all of us being patient while the program matures. Yesterday's excitement and euphoria felt like old times....while I have this sense that happy days are in our future. It is great to be a Clemson Tiger!

I am one of your fans, and I appreciate your blog and the positive manner that you contribute to the program.

Now, I have a few questions:

One, do you have information regarding Willy Korn's medical redshirt? How is he doing, physically?

Two, do you have information regarding Jacoby Ford's recovery...etc from his ankle injury? I know that Ford was hurt late in the Maryland game. However, on this subject, could you ask Coach Spence not to call anymore WR screens (with Ford) against really fast defensive teams like Virginia Tech? Watching that Virginia Tech game, I felt like we were going to get our WR's killed (and Ford did eventually get a bruised sternum) throwing the line of scrimmage WR screen.

Three, does anyone know the inside story of what's going on with LB Antonio Clay? Is he done or what? I know the background info pertaining to his sister's death...etc, which is tragic. However, I do wonder whether there is any indication of him coming back to play.

Ideas: In the past, you've done a very nice preview of the football depth chart....etc, and I think that it would be interesting if you could do a blog on this subject again prior to the Spring Game. I realize that you probably had intentions of doing this, already, but I found your commentary about the depth chart (with two and three deep, by position), to be useful and interesting.

Thank you, again, for your contributions to Clemson University.

Best Regards,

Roger

Roger,
Thanks for the e-mail and reliving some great memories of the 1970s.

Willy Korn should have no problem with his medical hardship. He will be a freshman next season. Korn is doing well and I think he will compete for playing time this spring and the future is extremely bright at this position.

Ford is doing well also. They are going to hold him back in this indoor track season so he can continue to rehab. The staff is being very cautious but expects good things from him in the fall.

I asked David Blackwell about Clay and his future and he said they are trying to do what is best for Clay and his long-term future. They are concerned about his state of mind and are doing everything they can to help him through his grieving process. At this time, no one knows what Clay’s football future will be.

I will do a couple of blogs in the coming weeks concerning the depth chart heading into the spring and a couple more after the spring.

Mickey,

I listen to the show every morning on the radio and think y'all do a great job. One of these days I'll actually call in and give my opinion!

I've got two questions involving recruiting. One is about Jaron Brown, I haven't seen any film on him, but apparently he is special since a few teams went after him very hard. After checking out his profile none of his attributes really stood out to me and makes me wonder what it is that everyone sees in him. He's only three stars according to rivals.com and he runs a 4.77/40. That's faster than me but seems kind of slow in comparison to others. Why wasn't he ranked higher than 3 stars? Is it his hands, potential, route running, etc?

The other question is, have you heard of Corey Robinson out of Paducah, KY? Just read an article on him and he sounds unreal on paper. The question goes to how do they give out stars? This kid threw 91, no joke, 91 touchdowns to set a national record and he only threw 4 interceptions! Completed 74% of his passes for 5,871 yds. He's 6'1, 187 and runs a 4.75! Sounds like a pretty solid prospect to me. He is headed to Troy and didn't really get any bigger school offers until late. Just thought I'd ask.

I hope Clemson lands a few of these national prospects tomorrow! Thanks for keeping your blog updated but tell Roy to update his!

Thank you,

Mills

Mills,

Thanks. Brown runs better than 4.77. I would guess he is more consistent in the 4.5 or 4.55 range. I think he is a three star player so that rating is appropriate. Brown is a good athlete and could play wide out or safety at Clemson.

I have not followed Robinson but it sounds like Troy got a great one.

Mickey,

Did you know 8 ACC teams have attempted 800+ free throws during the regular season since the 2001-2002 season. Any guesses about who the teams were? Well, in order:

UNC 2004-2005 864 attempts
WF 2004-2005 849 attempts
UNC 2006-2007 844 attempts
Duke 2001-2002 840 attempts
Duke 2005-2006 832 attempts
WF 2005-2006 820 attempts
WF 2006-2007 810 attempts
Duke 2002-2003 809 attempts

It seems to me that, if the Tigers had as much 'in-game' FT practice as our Tobacco Road comrades, that aspect of our game would improve.

When will the rest of the ACC challenge Swofford on this obvious bias? I understand its bad business for Duke and UNC not to dominate the ACC, but does it have to be so blatant?

Hansborough and his teammates are on pace to shatter the free throw attempt record this season.

Rick Barnes left Clemson in part, in my opinion, because he knew he'd never get a fair shake from the ACC office. Will OP come to the same realization eventually?

FYI -- the MOST free-throws a Clemson team attempted over the same era of ACC BBall was a whopping 694 by the 2004-2005 Tigers.

Jerry

Jerry,

I will have to take your word on the Duke information because I have sworn to never watch Duke again unless they are playing Clemson. I have sworn to watch other bad programming like “The View” or “Nancy Grace” instead. My blood pressure cannot take watching the officiating in Duke games anymore

Mickey,

I am indebted to you for your analysis and broad based info on the Tigers. I thank you for all of that.
As I live in London I can only manage seeing one game a season. (see attachment of WF game)

I share your concern regarding certain "issues" of the 2008 offensive line so important to the performance of the offense next season. During the Pats/Chargers playoff game,
the Pats employed 3 TEs successfully, when their aerial game failed to work. Why not take a leaf out of the Pats Playbook and employ Michael Palmer, Brian Linthicum and Chad Diehl the latter switched
from FB to hopefully improve the running game against the likes of BC and VT? Of course you might say I'm talking absolute rubbish in which case I bow to your expertise.

Best regards

Richard

PS-Jim Shirley ex FB under Coach Howard and classmate of mine also
shares our views regarding the offensive line.

Richard,
Great to hear from a Tiger in London. One thing Clemson has been able to do offensively is utilize two and even three tight end sets at times. I like the idea that the Patriots could spread the field when they thought they needed to and could play three tight ends and play more physical when they needed to. Clemson has some of this in their packages but they player you mentioned that will have the biggest impact is Chad Diehl. Coach Bowden said the other day that Diehl is their toughest player and he will be a key component to their short-yardage situations.

Stay in touch from your side of the pond.
