"Lady Tigers"

I've seen some back and forth the past few days on the use of "Lady Tigers" when denoting women's sports. Thought I would jump in and give a little history....

When I first started - it seems like it was in 1802 - everyone used "Lady Tigers" or whatever mascot to denote women's teams. Then it changed to just show the difference when men and women shared the same sport, like tennis. Lady Tigers Tennis vs. Men's Tennis or in basketball for the Lady Tigers vs. just Tigers. In softball, no need for Lady, or even lacrosse, because there is just one team at Clemson (and this was across the country).

But a looong time ago, I was chastised by someone at Clemson for using Lady Tigers in a headline for women's basketball. I was told that the school no longer differentiated and that they were all Tigers. Therefore, the school no longer (and hasn't for a while) used Lady in front of any of the women's sports. And I was told this morning, after a quick perusal of the board, "They are all just Tigers to us." So we follow the wishes of the school and don't use Lady Tigers. Hope that helps.

headline what I'm about to read about. While I do care about all Clemson sports there is only so much time in a day. If I see a headline for example that a starter is transferring from our basketball team or we have signed a 4 or 5 star, I want to know mens or womens before I click. I view it as click bait if I can't tell from the headline and I'm more likely to start going to another site for the news that identifies which program before I click. I'm go to treat and read the mens with a much greater since of urgency. One thing that really has chapped me in the past year is the fact that YoutubeTV now just has the team names on the program description and you click on what you think is a great matchup and you find yourself with Kentucky playing UNC in women's hoops instead. It's absurd - it's womens basketball - call it that, even if that mean always saying men's before the men's. It's a vital description.

Perfectly stated.
I have very limited time to scroll headlines and skim a few articles. I don’t want to waste my time looking at women’s sports. The headline should differentiate in whatever fashion is reasonable.

So when they refer to Lady Gamec**ks, are they referring to their women’s basketball team or the football team?

but for your headline purposes would you use the term women's "sport type" unless it is something like softball or lacrosse where there is no men's team. While I hope the women's team are successful, I am not near as interested in them as I am the men's teams. That would help many of us, and keep the gender equity people happy.

Us old timers (you are still a young whipper snapper) would appreciate it to help us manage our time better.

I agree. When I see "Tiger's Sign a Five-Star Transfer..." one automatically assumes football and clicks on. It's disappointing to find it's a "Lady's" sport.

I personally don't follow girl sports. And no amount of confusing headlines will ever make me feel any different.

I've noticed YAHOO has started mingling scores of basketball games in the same manner.

"Guy Tigers" or "Men Tigers" for the men's sports.

I like it. No need to differentiate. Women's basketball or men's basketball, they're both Tigers. Softball are Tigers. Football are Tigers.

But at the same time, no need to take offense if someone references "Lady Tigers" - especially here. Unless you happen to be one of the female athletes that is reference and you take personal offense. But that ain't gonna happen.

It's always those who have no direct stake in something who take offense, on behalf of those they feel are offended, so they can feel better about themselves!

Go Tigers! All of 'em!

Don’t use Lady Tigers again, but identify men’s sports as Men’s Basketball or Baseball Tiger or Softball Tigers. Problem solved, men don’t get offend by being call men.

Of all the things I thought I might read on here today, someone somewhere getting worked up about referring to Clemson’s women’s sports team as “ the lady tigers “ wasn’t what I expected. I feel like I live in bizarro world the last 5 or 6 years.

We really need another pandemic

I know some of this stems from me making a quick post immediately after a baseball or softball game has concluded (when we win) with the subject line either starting with "Tigers Win" or "Lady Tigers Win". I do it that way partly because number one I think most everybody is going straight to the main Tiger Board where it shows all topics from the different sports, and two a lot of times both teams are playing on the same day and it does help to differentiate the posts. I know that the term lady isn't used in an official capacity from the Clemson sports programs. I do find it interesting that you were chastised by someone from Clemson. To me it sounds like it is somewhat "political" for Clemson to not use Lady nowadays and I'll stop that train of thought here.

Since I am on a fan site I don't plan stopping or changing how I post the results of the 2 ballgames. If I ever get the request from a mod or owner of the site to stop using "Lady". I'll stop the postings of the results altogether.

I have read and entire article before and had no idea it was talking about womens sports until there was mention of players names and it was obviously the "Lady Tigers" the article was about. How about at least mentioning the sport in the title or even the first sentence "Tigers take on Tarheels in womens basketball" Whats wrong with that?

Whatever. They're women, there are only two genders, and Clemson female athletes are in-fact lady's.

If Clemson's admin has a hard time with those facts then maybe they should exit the higher education business.

I think it’s ridiculous that we can’t refer to ladies as ladies anymore and yes it is very confusing when we have multiple sports playing at once to not have them deferentially described in the headlines.
